Curiel just gets on base at a crazy high clip. He's got great plate vision and discipline. Sees a ton of pitches and isn't afraid to take a walk. Great guy to have at the top in front of our mashers.

Difference with Crews was he could set the table or clean the table with one swing. Curiel's ceiling is so high though and he has plenty of time to fill out and develop that part of his game.

What's wild is Curiel's high school batting average was only 0.318 with a 0.424 on base percentage.

With someone as highly regarded as Curiel and as good as he looks right now I would have thought those high school numbers would have been much higher. Maybe slightly above competent coaching is paying him bigger dividends.

yeah that is kinda wild.

I inagine he was pressing a hit trying to do too much.

he is really letting the game come to him. He seems perfectly happy getting on base any way he can, so he’s probably being more selective with his swings and what pitches he looks at.

Curiel is a monster but come on.

This is the best season a freshman everyday player to ever had at LSU uniform IMO. People will argue competition, etc but he did it against the best in Omaha as well. You can argue but stats-wise this guy was the best which is why his number is retired.

Enjoyed the most phenomenal freshman season in school history and became the first LSU player to hit .400 in a single season … Led the Tigers in batting average (.400), runs (72), hits (100), RBI (76), doubles (21), triples (3), homers (12) and slugging percentage (.652) … also rated first in the SEC in RBI, runs and total bases (163) … ranked third in the league in batting average and doubles … was the only freshman named to the first or second all-conference teams … set an LSU mark for assists with 201 … had a .961 fielding percentage with 10 errors in 306 chances … the Tigers’ clean-up hitter, he was also second on the squad with 18 steals … hit a team-high .406 (39-for-96) in SEC regular-season games with four homers and 22 RBI …

Certainly seems to be trending that way! This guy can flat out hit.

I don’t think he is as smooth as Crews was at catching the ball in the out field. As far as getting to balls they are what and what. It felt like if Crews could
Get a glove on it he was catching it.

Just scrolling through his HS box scores from last year, he faced one guy who was drafted 11th overall. He faced another one that will be the top HS pitcher drafted this year. He faced former LSU commit Matt Champion (now at Oregon).

The league he plays in is, without question, the best HS baseball league in the country. One of his opponents from last year has 4 potential first rounders for 2025 on it.

It's not out of the question that some of the competition that he's faced to this point is less talented than guys he faced in high school.

What evidence do you have to suggest that he's been poorly coached up until now?

He has HS teammates committed to Texas, Texas A&M, and Tennessee. Orange Lutheran's coach is definitely slacking.

None. That's why I used the dunno emoji.

I was just speculating on a possible reason why his numbers are better now in college than his high school numbers.

But your theory seems correct. He just faced better talent in high school, so far.

With a "football recruiting mindset" that is hard to translate.

Can you at least wait until SEC play before comparing him to anyone?

Crews may very well be the greatest LSU player ever. Can we pump the brakes just a bit?

Dylan crews is the greatest college baseball player ever, the definition of a 5 tool player. I can’t name another ball player that deserved to go #1 overall each year he played but him.

Crews was a 5-tool player, Curiel is maybe a 3-tool player

I don't care....the fact Curial is even compared with Crewes tells me how great he is! IMO he is as advertised and then some.
If we can keep him around for his sophomore season his "power" potential goes through the roof...over the wall in center field!

The crews-Curiel comparison doesnt make sense, but Curiel is definitely a 4-tool player, just lacks the power right now.

He was recorded at 92mph from the OF between his sophomore and junior season in high school. He's got a decent arm, we havent had to see it really yet here though.

Why can’t someone’s swing look like a great player’s? There is a tendency to expand what a poster actually wrote. You could post that Ole Miss has a good outfielder and someone will rush in and argue that you’re full of shite and that Ole Miss is not better than LSU.

It’s debatable but it’s also still early.

He has plenty of power. He consistently hits the ball as hard as anyone on the team. He just isnt emphasizing launch angle at the moment, and a lot of that probably is by design and how he fits on this team.

Lots of good ones--was Crews even the best one on that 2023 team, meaning better than Paul Skenes?

But Curiel is certainly off to a tremendous start. He's still got a few more years as a Tiger, so I think it's too early to say.
