Faulk wasn’t even the best back on his team with Collins.

Let’s get this straight
Faulk never won an MVP
Never won a Heisman - didn’t even make it to the ceremony which both Cannon AND Jerry Stovall did
BUT THAT ARGUMENT WAS ABOUT COMPLETE:
He never played defense - NEVER
He never played punter

Cannon DID everything Faulk did PLUS was this:
The RUNNING AND DEFENSIVE back of the entire decade of the 1950’s IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

Then their pro careers are not even close. Cannon won the equivalent of 2 Super Bowls and was the game MVP.
Was offensive player of the year as a Pro.

Cannon would have smoked Faulk in the 100. Absolutely smoked his arse. He ran those 9.4’s on fricking grass. Then his strength wasn’t close either to Cannon’s.

You guys have nothing but recency bias. I saw all of them play.

You want to know who the best football player I’ve ever seen in an LSU uniform?
Tommy Casanova
He would OWN this group of DBs and RBs. Go do a little research and find that pic of him with PP7 and group while they were at LSU. He dwarfed them as man…. He was fantastic.

Casanova was 6’2 200lbs at LSU. Exact same size as PP7. He didn’t “dwarf” shite.

Watching that dude in HS left no doubt that he would turn into the college and NFL player that he eventually became.

Imo..
(1A) Faulk
(1B) Fournette

Lots of great LSU RBs but those two are top shelf!

Edit: I personally would have Fournette right behind Henry in 2015 but Heisman voting had McCaffrey ahead of Fournette so take that how you will.

Problem was Fournette didn’t perform when we went head to head with Henry. He lost the Heisman that night.

Did someone really say put Trendon Holiday at DE because of his speed?

He's probably the best all around back in LSU history. Collins was a great runner over an injury-plagued year and a half. One of those cases of a kid with a million-dollar body and a 5-cent head (although, to be fair, Collins was likely dealing with some untreated mental illness that certainly did him no favors).

All the "Iron Man" stuff you're comparing him, too, the 50s was an era of anti-specialization. Everyone played both ways. The best guys only came out to rest or for injury.

And Cannon was an elite all-round athlete. If he wasn't good at football, he likely would have become a decathlete (or specialized in either the 100 or shot put, his best events.) He was almost a clone of Jim Thorpe, from an athletic standpoint.

You're sleeping on Faulk, strength-wise. He was extraordinarily strong for his size.

I'm not one to tear down one to build up another. I'll leave that to you.

All I can say is what I watched: Faulk was a literal difference maker. Faulk not on the team in 1996 and 1997, those 19 wins look more like 9. Or 10. Maybe 11. He turned games around, by himself.

And, it is almost without question that Billy Cannon was the best "football player" college had in the 50s or 60s, possibly excepting Jim Brown.

THE problem had nothing to do with Fournette. THE problem was Les''s stoopid offense that posed no threat to Bama. IOW, until Brandon Harris made Bama play honest on D they would over-commit to stopping the run.

It was so bad, Bama sent not one but TWO defenses on the field. One would trot off when they saw the lineup.

Peterson must have shrunk while in the NFL because he is listed as 6’1”.
He wasn’t 6’2” not even close. He was 6’0 1/4” at the combine.

Faulk ran behind a fantastic Oline in Faneca and Co. HoF Olineman.

As I’ve stated, Cannon did everything Faulk did and more as a back, punt and kick returner plus passed from that position. I mean, I’m not tearing down Faulk to build up cannon.
Cannon was great when he played where he didn’t specialize. Faulk was a third down back to protect Brady. Look at his NFL career as a barometer when comparing him to someone of his generation, size, etc - Warrick Dunn.

I don't give a fiddler's frick what either did in the NFL. Cannon won the Heisman and led a Championship team. Faulk brought LSU football back from the dead

We have 3 4,000 yard rushers so I think a nod to Charles the Great and Dalton Hillard seems in order. Not sure any other schools has 3 with 4,0000

Wisconsin has the following:
Ron Dayne, 7,125
Jonathan Taylor, 6,174
Montee Ball 5,140
Melvin Gordon 4,915
Anthony Davis 4,676
James White 4,015
