The fact that people are as brainwashed as you are is the reason we are in this entire situation that we’re in. Not just sports, but the state of the world. This world is so fricked.

For the downvoters, why do you think players shouldn't be able to make money off of their name and likeness?

They get 100k in free benefits each school year. Stipends, room, food, education, Chargers if you go to Alabama, etc.

They are getting paid. They get a free education, top of the line medical assistance, top of the line training, food they wouldn't be eating on their own plus a stipend and many other amenities.
Are you gonna pony up and pay them?

How about if they don’t play, the school can revoke their scholarships for the semester, and save the money on tuition, housing, food... etc

I didn’t downvote you, but because Bama’s boosters are gonna pay kids way more than any other school is willing to. Tua? Here’s $10k per signature. And so forth. It’ll just wind up being another arms race that further separates the haves from the have nots.

Ok... but why can't they make money off of their name?

So exactly how things are now.
No matter what happens, there is going to be under the table shite going on. May as well at least let the players make money off of their name.

You can’t ask these young men to go out and risk their lives to play football this season without monetary compensation. I’m not saying pay them every year, but the school needs to pay them this year for putting their lives on the line. It’s already a dangerous game—and this virus makes it 1000x more deadly. I’m thinking pay per game like in the NFL because we still don’t know how many games will be played.
Ummm…
1. They already are paid.
2. They also receive a scholarship worth a lot of money.
3. They aren't risking their lives any more than any other year in the past. 20 years old that are healthy are not at risk.
1000X more deadly is a joke. Have you seen the statistics on how many people their age have died from this? And these guys are athletes so it is even as dangerous for them statistically.
This is akin to being afraid to take a shower because you might slip and fall and die from hitting your head.

Latest data: 99.2% who test positive recover. Most of those are a asymptomatic.
99.2% Recover Completely!
And no athlete, college or professional, has died from coronavirus. Zero.
Facts.
What are we doing? We have believed a lie.

IOW, I can think they should get paid for name and likeness, but it has exactly zero to do with covid.
Op is saying they should get paid because covid which is dumb af. They stand a greater chance catching covid by NOT being involved in a structured and monitored environment like LSU football during a season.

It doesn't, but I'm branching off of the age-old "athletes should be paid" topic with my thoughts.

Mystic, the recovery rate is higher than that. The CDC has even said the undocumented cases are 10x the recorded cases. Obviously, almost all the undocumented cases have RECOVERED. The actual death rate is statistically NOTHING. Yet we have completely crippled our economy and way of life over this.

They choose to play. They don’t have to play at all.

Just wait until a big time coach gets it and recovers in three days.

it's going to be opening a can of worms. Its going to be a full fledged bidding war for recruits to whatever schools alumni can offer the best deal for recruits to advertise for their companies or whatever creative way they can think of to "use their likeness". For example Nike could offer some really good deals to Oregon players to "use their likeness'. I'm sure Microsoft could think of a lot of ways to use University of Washingtons players likeness. Even on the same team they'll be some players making hundreds of thousands and others making next to nothing.
