Meh, Lsu signing Kevin Faulk and him tearing it up as a freshman got the ball rolling IMHO. I remember the buzz the fans had playing in the weedeater bowl in 1995. It was nuts. He put us on the map. That started the modern era of lsu football. Saban took it to another level. Those Dinardo recruits were good players, but coaching makes a difference. Lou Tepper anyone? Those 4 year lettermen didn't get the recognition they deserved. It's too bad they didn't win more.

The refs didn't screw us in Auburn, no way Florida beats LSU twice. I honestly believe that

How can you not be sure about Toledo? His Toledo exit was by far the worst of all of his coaching stops.

I think you’ve it it backasswards.

Nick Saban is what he is today, arguably one of the GOATs, because of LSU.

Nick’s record at Michigan State was respectable but not a world beater. Too much competition for recruits and difficult schedules in the Big 10 made it hard to dominate.

The potential of Louisiana recruiting became obvious to him at his first interaction with LSU in the Shreveport bowl game, which he lost decisively to the Tigers. Nonetheless he was hired here because his obvious leadership and management skills were apparent to our AD and his path to greatness was established through that connection. He saw LSU as a sleeping giant. He tried to take that talent to the pros prematurely and failed primarily because established professional players would not buy into his discipline standards. Recruits at Alabama did and in combination with the Tide’s resources allowed him to become the master he is known as today.

Again not saying Saban isn’t great, b/c he obviously is, but I think Dinardo is under appreciated.

I appreciate what Dinardo did for LSU, but it was Carl Reese and Morris Watts who brought the wins, and the team fell apart when they left. Lou Tepper was a disastrous hire.

Nick Saban was also made by LSU. He was going nowhere at Michigan State. MS was a middle of the pack team unable to recruit against the Univ of Michigan. LSU put Saban on the map. It worked for both parties.

Without Mark Emmert, there is no Nick!
Remember Joe Dean was the AD for that hire. When it was known Nick might want the job, Joe tells Emmert, " I wonder how much he wants?" Emmert's reply, " Let's see if he really wants to come here first!"

Yep, good point.

I never begrudged Nick for leaving. The NFL was pulling him harder and harder each year he was here, and the more he succeeded, the harder the pull was.

The thing I (and I'm sure most Tiger fans) had an issue with was how he left. The whole situation was handled poorly.

I believe he got robbed of a playoff spot in year 2 with the Dolphins. If I remember correctly they went 9-7 and didn't get a wildcard spot ... I don't know the details, but who knows what happens if he takes the Fins to the playoffs, Bama may have hired a coach by then and we aren't on this timeline.

I have always heard a rumor that Nick called LSU from Miami and asked if he could come back. Terry loved it in Baton Rouge. Can you imagine if our AD said sure come on back and handed Miles his buyout. Would never happen but in hindsight that would have been the best decision.

If only when he got on a plane to come back to LSU Skip would have kicked Les Miles to the curb so we could have taken Saban back.

Cool papa, that's is what I will Never forgive Saban for; until his Bama plane touched down in Tuscaloosa Saban Denied he was going to be the HC at Alabama.

Saban made us better. He made Les Miles record better than it would have been because beating Saban was the goal.

Glad to have someone like that in our conference. We won a lot of games

I recall some folks wouldn’t have wanted Saban to stay here. Yea, even after his Natty. 8-9 win “down” seasons just weren’t cutting it for some. LSU had and still has some of the most myopic fans in college football and that’s being generous.

But to be fair, his journey through the NFL probably helped make him a better college coach.

Without Emmert, there's no Saban or football facility upgrades.

I also remember that Joe Dean wanted to nickel and dime the Saban contract and Emmert said pay the man

This is simply not true. I guess y'all are thinking of the '97 Florida upset win, but Saban did not continue anything Dinardo started--he completely revamped the program. This Dinardo revisionist history narrative is new and not reflective of actual events.

He would have left after one more title either way. People get carried away with how many titles he would have won had he stayed but he was 100% going to the NFL at some point.
