We obviously think giving the running back extra time with the ball is more beneficial. NFL teams are less likely to have the advantage we have

I used to like it less than I do now.

On a different note, 30 years from now when people talk about the Les era, the toss power will be the play everyone remembers. It's the bread and butter play of LSU football in the Miles Era.

Do you honestly think that anyone related to LSU football cares if you like it or not?

I don't have stats, but recent memory has me liking this play. It seems like our Offensive lineman tear the defense up on this one. Is this the play where the Guard pulls over the center? If so, this is a recipe for a 3 yard gain at minimum.

It really isn't much different than a regular lead except the running back gets the ball deeper. Advantageous if your running back has good vision.

The NFL features more single back sets and wants the ball in the QBs hand as much as possible

Wasn't it a toss lead that Charles Scott scored on against Georgia a few years back?

if you're talking about the game winner, no I'm pretty sure that was out of the gun and looked more like a zone read where the QB gave (if memory serves).

Ridley did win the clusterfrick ending 2010 Tenn game off the toss dive though.

I don't recall seeing any defense really act like they think it's a sweep. Most of the time it just seems like it results in 1 maybe 2 yards and a cloud of dust. Seems like an easy read for the defense and easy stop.

Then you haven't really been paying attention, and it isn't designed to score a TD on every play anyway.

that was a nice little wrinkle with the power play/ La'el pulling from the backside. we don't always do that.

also, to the OP, the reverse vs Bama to Peterson in 2010 was off a toss to the RB first. so, you can run some manner of trickery out of it.

Considering it's a power play, there really isn't much need for deception.. You can fake the toss and rollout but the play is designed to get the ball quickly into your RB to allow him to make his decision on where to attack.. It's usually used as down and distance play allowing the offense to get into better sets.

Can't run play action? What about the fake toss naked boot leg?

I'm not saying it has never worked, I'm just saying that I like other run plays we run better. I could give you one hundred you tube links of runs not named the toss lead that go for big plays but I won't. The Iowa game kinda proves my point. Yes the first run went for big yardage, but we ran it about 12 times the rest of the game and it was not very effective. The big runs by hill the rest of the game came on traditional handoff type runs.
