Football coaching is a copy cat profession. When the next big thing comes along, everyone copies it (run and shoot, wildcat, zone read, etc).

Not a single football team other than LSU runs the toss "g", otherwise known as the toss lead. Why has nobody copied this?

Id say because the play doesn't offer teams a positive risk reward on what is essentially a power lead play.. Every team has the play but simply chooses to hand it off. Adding the toss means another element you have to practice.. I'm one of those that doesn't love it or hate it but it's part of our power game so I accept the play just like any other power play.

I think there is unnecessary risk on the toss, but it does work. I like it until we fumble doing it.

I like it because the defense is not use to the time. The RB does absolutely hit the hole faster than a hand off. That split second can mean everything.

Remember, these defenses only see this play once a year, when they play us.

Have we ever fumbled it?

I don't think we have, making the "unnecessary" risk negligible and acceptable

Probably more ball security than a regular handoff. Less chance of it getting disrupted

I agree 100%

I also admit that when we first started running it I pondered, "Why toss it and risk a fumble when we should just be handing it off?" But, I have never seen us fumble the toss, so I concede that point is invalid.

I still think it puts us at a disadvantage on play action, and also the linebackers and safeties will read run much quicker on the toss than if they were still holding ground for a play action fake if we were handing the ball off.

Sigh. First of all, the two versions that we run is a toss iso(double the 3 tech, center blocks back on nose, fullback leads up on MLB). And a toss power. Both are effective for what they are. They both fit in with our theme perfectly. Big nasty offensive line, a mean hard hitting, wreck less abandon fullback, and a big bruising running back all just inflicting punishment on the defense over the course of 4 quarters. Just like any running play, the opportunity for a big gain is always there, but only when the one on one battle is won. If the center and 2 guards get their block, full back gets his, then it's up to the running back to win his one on one matchup. That's when the play busts for a big gain!

I've seen UGA and Stanford run it, and I think the saints have run it as well.

And there are available fakes. The qb draw/ISO can be run off of it. A naked bootleg can be run off of it. Don't forget the available play action passes off of it.

It's a damn good play.

they are about to. Did you see the practice film of LSU running the zone read play with the option to pass to WR in the flat? Other teams are about to start running that play all across the country.

It's been run for years.

Other teams that feature the fullback have copied LSU too

unmmm, the Pitt Panthers under Todd Ghram I believe, started that play. ASU, Toledo, Boise State, and even Auburn runs that play. It's nothing that LSU invented and if you truly think so then it definitely proves the amount of football you watch and knowledge you have

has LSU run any of these? And QB/ draw ISO? How does the QB fake the toss and then run a draw? I'm not sure that exists.

Didn't Jefferson score on a 75 yard run on that play a few years ago against TENN????

I was saying that LSU is copying that play from auburn and other teams are going to start copying that play from auburn too. Other teams might have started it but auburn has made it famous and is the reason that other teams, LSU included, are going to start running it.
