$700k is an awful lot of money to spend on a coach to a sport that BLEEDS money.

Looking at 2015-16 finances:

Baseball made $5.9M and spent $4.3M for $1.6M profit
Women's Bball made just $300k and spent $4.2M for $3.9M Loss

Woman's basketball was by far our worst sport from a profit standpoint. Woman's softball even made $400k and spent just $2.4M for only a $2M loss.

It's almost not even worth it to invest in woman's basketball. It spends so much money and makes nothing. I'm sure UConn and a couple schools crack into the millions revenue side but still end up losing money on woman's basketball. The sport is dominated by 1 team right now, it's incredibly boring, why are we paying someone $700k a year to coach it? Even if we're making the tournament each year but never coming close to winning a title how is that worth it?

It’s a lot like divorce. At this point it’s probably cheaper to keep her.

Why should we want to pay another buyout?

Let her contract run out and then go get Pokey - lickety split.

Yep. Some have been saying that for a while, then there’s the Caldwell clones.

I agree she has been subpar during her tenure here.

However, outrage over a women's basketball coach?

Well she did make two sweet sixteens, and routinely gets us to be a 20 win tourney team.

However, gone are the days where we are dominant and ranked top ten.

Meh - she isn't as bad as some of our coaches, cough cough.

Why not just ask her to take a $500,000 decrease in pay. If she doesn't accept, then get rid of her. What's her buyout? $1000?

Knowing Joe and his masterful negotiating....probably north of $1M

As long as Joe Alleva is employed, there’s no point in getting rid of any LSU coaches. He doesn’t deserve to be involved in making another hire at LSU.

Because it WBB! Nobody cares enough to know how much she makes! Sounds like that 700k should go to DD instead.

If we want to talk about Alleva failures, let’s talk about her absolutely ridiculous contract- $700,000 on a fricking women’s basketball coach who was only making $350,000 at her last job.
Can you imagine if Alleva did something as stupid as this when he hired a football coach?

People don't care about women's basketball (myself included) but you are absolutely right about the ridiculous salary. To spend that much on a non-profit producing sport is absurd. However, I suspect Alleva, like most AD's, is worried that if LSU goes cheap on women's basketball while paying millions for football, mens basketball and baseball, there would be some Title IX or discriminatory actions brought against LSU. Don't try to say that the market value of men's sports is MUCH higher than that of womens' sports. They don't care about that fact.

Also, and it's sad that we live in this type of social environment where people can't be judged strictly on merit, but maybe Joe feels paying her that much is just the cost of lawsuit avoidance/bad publicity. She checks two diversity boxes (black female) which keeps potential sexism/racism claims against LSU at bay. I may be wrong, but I think she is the only black HC at LSU right now.

There's no demand that LSU womens' basketball be successful (like there is in football, baseball and mens basketball), so whether they go 5-25 or 25-5 isn't really that big of a deal.

To her credit though -- she is largely responsible to getting Naz Reid here for next year's men's basketball team.

the contract would be fine if we were winning and like another poster said, WBB can make money.

But its true that Nikki has been a huge bust and needs to go.

Yep. I too am outraged at the high salary to performance ratio. Women's basketball is just not on the forefront of the news both nationally or locally to intrigue a following. I didn't even know Nikki's salary till this post.

More like outrage over the fact that I have to pay Aramark $7 for a bottle of water that they may or may not have after I finish walking to the football stadium from my $275 parking spot due to ridiculous bullshite contracts like Caldwell’s lol

Most people don't piss all over themselves and run around screaming the sky is falling when hires don't work out.
