How do LSU fans look back on Gary Danielson and Verne Lundquist in 2026?

I think their last LSU game together was ten years ago vs. Alabama.
I was a kid during their years announcing SEC games on CBS. As I got older, I discovered that opinions from LSU fans were mixed. (I recall some said Danielson was too blatant an Alabama homer?) Now being removed ten years, I was curious if the sentiment had shifted since then.
As a kid, to me Gary and Verne were simply the ‘voices’ announcing the game. I didn’t have a notion to judge the quality of their commentary or like/dislike it. In my head, they were just the voices that accompanied LSU football.
Either way, I have a nostalgic fondness for the duo and that broadcasting era. The CBS theme song always triggered a giddy excitement in me before kickoff (and sometimes a nervous tinge, like when Arkansas had Darren McFadden….)

I try not to think of them at all. Are they still covering the B1G games on Channel 11? I haven't been watching any college football this year 'cept SEC games

Danielson and Verne Lundquist were awful. It was almost preferable to listen to the game with them on mute.

I miss Verne.. his voice on a big play was iconic. He seemed like a nice guy.

Verne > Danielson. I didn't hate them as a duo, they were better than replacement level and they were better than tRant would have you believe. I always viewed Verne as a poor man's Keith Jackson. Keith Jackson was the 20th century gold standard for play by play imo.

yup. met ron in 2001 in atlanta at the SECCG coaches luncheon. he hosted it with fulmer and nick. was my first time meeting nick and getting a photo with him also.
todd blackledge and vern were better than gary. gary sucked. just like he did as Qb of the lions.
i miss keith jackson also. was great.
just like madden and summerall in the NFL.

I don't recall which season it was, but during one LSU/Bama game, Verne Lundquist referred to Bama as "we." He said something along the lines of "we've got work to do." Verne and Gary's games were always a Bama love fest.

I actually like them, but I'm in the minority on this board; however, don't let the rant fool you. I remember when Vern retired and got a standing ovation at Tiger Stadium during his last game there.

Verne was great in pre-game, half time, and commercial breaks. In terms of in-gam color analysis his chortling and non-sensical commentary grew old.
Gary was good, but he always wanted to prove he was the smartest football brain in the room. Couldn't just call a game without talking about what he saw in practice, what he knew, etc. He was just like Romo. And if he was right, he'd tell you all about it.
The best color guys are Fowler, McDounough, and Blackledge.

Don't really miss them tbh. I think people associate them with an era of football that they miss more than them specifically as actual commentators.
The one thing that I can kinda laugh about now is that Ole Miss game in 09 where we spiked the last second away and Verne was actually just screaming on air WHAT ARE THEY DOING, because we were all thinking the same thing
