Giving a 60 year old man a 10 year 95 million contract with few stipulations for starters.

These seems dramatic but the common denominator is Austin Thomas

I think he just plain quit. Woodward obviously never saw that coming. The coaching process should be scientific and systematic. It should involve extensive psychological profiling.

Were there no red flags in South Bend?

Every coach has different red flags.

I recall hearing from Michigan State fans that Saban won’t succeed because he cannot retain assistant coaches…and the a-hole thing.

Ed Orgeron had a record number of red flags that most of the Rant agreed with. We were all wrong…until we were right again after the natty.

I think he was a great hire when he came here. I think his guaranteed contract combined with his soured relationship with Woodward, caused him to check out and quit working as hard.

1. He was a decent, successful coach in his 50s.

2. At some point, the game passes coaches by.

3. He came looking for the “SEC Athletes” and thought that he would automatically be successful putting more athletic kids on the field.

4. MHO is he had no idea how to interact with southern athletes, many of whom have a background of poverty, no college education in the home, etc. At ND sure he had kids go to the NFL but the types who DON’T go to the NFL are getting degrees in accounting, engineering, law, medicine, etc. The typical LSU athlete who doesn’t make the league drives a forklift or 18 wheeler for an LSU alum owned business. Evidence: early focus on his part was on graduation rates and such. He never got the “I don’t come here to play school” mindset. The stupid dances with athletes he couldn’t sign.

5. He lacked the work ethic of the previous 3 coaches. Saban, Miles, and Orgeron logged serious hours in football ops. He thought institution change (some of which I applaud— nutrition program is a good example) would be enough.

What do you think you would have seen looking at the portal needs of the OU roster after last year’s 6-7 season? I don’t think fans have grown accustomed to how quickly things can change in this new era in both a positive and a negative direction, especially when dealing with injuries. I know the current narrative is that Kelly quit on the team, and maybe he did. On the other hand, the team may have been a new OC, new OL coach, and portal QB away from a playoff run next season like OU.

Do not agree. This team is not a contender, but I admit that there is a lot for whoever comes in to build on. Far more than what was here after Ogeron.

Yes
I thought is was an outstanding hire at the time

And a “big” move

How many programs could hire a “Kelly” from Notre Dame

Then fire him

Then hire Lane Kiffen away from Ole Miss

As he’s going to the playoffs

This is historical

He got paid and thought winning would be easy at LSU because Les and Ed did it

We got it so wrong for the same reason we are going to get it wrong with the next hire; hiring based on past success rather than potential.
And, yes, it includes the current Ole Miss coach. Hiring him is more cash thrown down the toilet.

Because Fat Scott made a cowardly hire thinking only of himself and his reputation and nothing of the program.

Every bad thing about Kelly turned out to be true. He couldn't win big games. He only won at ND because of a soft arse schedule and favorable treatment to a blue blood legacy program. He is allergic to balanced football teams. He is a Yankee a-hole.

It’s the classic he won’t do this to us until he does!
What has Lane won? A conference title at FAU and that’s it.
He is a very good offensive mind but an average coach.
