Homestead Exemption

It's beyond time to bring the 75K up to today's standards.
When Louisiana implemented the $75,000 exemption limit in 1980:
• It was incredibly generous for its time, as the exemption completely covered or nearly covered the entire value of a typical home in the state.
• A homeowner with a median-priced $85,100 home only paid property taxes on the remaining $10,100 of its market value.
Today, with the average home price in Louisiana hovering around $218,000, that same $75,000 exemption protects less than a third of a typical home's value.
This needs to be front and center for all Louisiana lawmakers
In 1980, the 75K exemption was 86% of the median home value.
lawmakers need to bring the exemption up to at least 188K.

It should be $350K

No. Normal, sensible, and not drowning in debt. I don't have any need or desire for a 3,000 sq. ft. residence. I grew up in a 1,500 sq. ft. home with a family of five.

Yes, agree. Our whole tax code is jacked

Same goes for taxation on social security:
quote:
The original federal thresholds—$25,000 for single filers and $32,000 for married couples filing jointly—have not been increased since the tax on Social Security benefits began in 1984. They are not indexed for inflation, so over time more beneficiaries have become subject to the tax. Social Security Administration1

Homestead exemption should be gotten rid of so I can buy up the ghetto at the sheriffs sale

The homestead exemption needs to be removed entirely.
Here is why. People with crappy houses in crappy areas pay zero. Let them get some skin in the game. If everyone paid at least a little then those already paying wouldn't have to pay as much.

What does the property tax go towards in Louisiana?
How would you suggest the state make up that loss of revenue?

This is how people with no jobs can live at grandma's paid off house in north Baton Rouge free for generations.

Cut spending 3% across the board

Great in theory not how it will. Instead it will be the government agencies will have more to squander!

Get rid of homestead exemption.
Half of Baton Rouge (I’ll let you guess which half) pays nothing. Their houses are not worth $75,000.
Make everyone pay and the rate would drop.
We are subsidizing half the city and thinking we are getting a “deal”.
Wake up.

We have the highest homestead exemption in the country, how’s that working out?
Get rid of it and lower property tax rates. Everyone should pay something.

There is no state property tax. But parish/city revenue amounts would be cut. According to the Google robot, raising the property tax exemption across the board would result in a $30mm-$45mm revenue loss to East Baton Rouge parish and city government and agencies.
Might be able to make it work through a stepped up proposal. Or get rid of some exemptions elsewhere, and remove all special exemptions currently in the constitution.
Increasing the homestead exemption would lead to increased millage rates which would put a higher tax burden on commercial and industrial users.

Thirty to forty percent of actual property owned in the city of New Orleans is owned by nonprofit entities that pay no property tax.
