Saban is better than Miles. He just is. If he would have stayed, LSU would have 2 or 3 more championships at least.
I'll disagree with that point.
Saban didn't stay, because he didn't want to stay. His goal was to reach the NFL as a head coach, and LSU was just a planned stop along the way. Sure, we benefitted from it, but our success was a byproduct, as he auditioned for the league.
After he won the national title, he felt he had shown all he could or needed to here, and his heart wasn't into remaining as LSU's coach.
Had he not gotten the Miami job, I feel pretty confident he'd have moved on to an even more visible program (as he did by leaving Michigan St for us), and try to show his goods there. Someone like, yes, Alabama; or Texas, or Miami etc. I'd say Penn St in a heartbeat if he got the chance.
Whatever happened with the Dolphins showed he's not the same type of coach as Harbaugh, Carroll etc, and it crashed and burned. So he left, Alabama gave him a golden parachute (and remained the most prominent SEC school, so it was still an upgrade over LSU), and he jumped.
So, short answer, no- Saban was not ever going to win 2-3 more titles here.

Miles came, and for whatever reason, made a definitive public statement while at the absolute height of his demand that he was not going anywhere, not even his beloved alma mater Michigan (which also is a more prominent national program than LSU is). Miles has pumped LSU up at every opportunity, in contrast to, say, his successor at Oklahoma St (remember how meek Gundy was in 2011; as compared to Miles firing broadsides at USC and the Pac 10 back in 2007. Maybe if Gundy had been emphatically promoting his team instead of being so timid, they'd have gotten the votes, like we did).
Miles has taken advantage of the media with his "goofy" persona- everything he does is memorable. People wait on his every statement, even if they're trying to trip him up... and the results have been that LSU has become universally known.

Has LSU football improved under CLM?

Yes, without question. LSU has been a perennial powerhouse for a decade, having nothing like the kind of sustained success you've seen. CLM is a goofball and not the OCD administrator Saban was, but he's been very, very good.

The fact of the matter is that Les was 27-21 at Oklahoma State before even coming here. He was an average coach there and has not improved while he has been at LSU.

He's 99-26 you dolt.

Miles inherited the top SEC program with by far the most talented roster and yet he still managed to lose 2 games a year

A- Saban's last 3 seasons 30-9:
2002: 8-5 (4 TD losses to AU&UA and bowl loss)
2003: 13-1 SEC&BCS Champs (2 score home loss to unranked 5 loss Zook team 0 pts on offense 7 pt BCSCG win over #1 Oklahoma)
2004: 9-3 (30 pt loss to UGA and bowl loss)

B- Miles' first 3 seasons 34-6:
2005: 11-2 SECW Champs (1 OT loss 40 pt bowl win over top 10 Miami)
2006: 11-2 Sugar Bowl Champs (2 close road losses to top 5 teams 30 pt bowl win over top 10 Notre Dame)
2007: 12-2 SEC&BCS Champ (2 3OT losses 3 TD BCSCG win over #1 Ohio State)

Choose A or B.

And just for kicks (because Saban fans LOVE kicks amirite??:rimshot:):

Saban's last 3 seasons 30-9:
2002: 8-5
2003: 13-1 SEC&BCS Champs
2004: 9-3

Miles' last 3 seasons 33-7:
2011: 13-1 SEC Champs & BCS screw job (beat BCS Champ on road)
2012: 10-3
2013: 10-3

10 years later, 30-9 vs 33-7. It certainly hasn't NOT improved

And Miles has done this against a MUCH tougher SEC, particularly SECW, schedule every year.

Played BCS Champ every year from 2006 to 2012 (excluding 2007 obviously and TWICE in 2011) and BCS runner up in 2013 (handed them only loss prior to BCSCG).

So yeah, there's all that too.

Nick Saban won 58% of his games at Michigan State.

Les Miles won 57% of his games at Oklahoma St.

Nick Saban won 75% of his games at LSU.

Les Miles has won 79% of his games.

Yet you dumbshits worship Saban.

I depends on how you see the team before Les was here.

We are not better every year than we were in 2003 (though some years we have been)

We are generally better than any other period of time in LSU football history. Not every year, but almost every year.

Why not just win 'em all??? Every fricking one.

Clearly if a tard like Les can get us so close in 05, 06, 11, and 12, Sabes the GOAT would just annihilate anyone in sight if he ever came to this sleeping giant of a.....oh wait. He did.

I completely forgot we won 5 titles under him!!! Best years of my life!!!

You must be in your twenties. Six straight losing seasons in the '90's. Add a 4-7 and a 3-8 in there under Dinardo.

BUT, is this program better now than when CLM took over?

What were the other choices available? Did CLM do a better job than Nutt or Petrino would have? Almost certainly.

It's not like we fired Saban to hire Miles. Saban quit on us and we hired the best coach available at the time.

quote:

till, his coaching "quirks" are becoming fatal flaws now that the blowouts have begun.

No question we were dominated most of the night by Mississippi State, despite being a play or 2 short of a miraculous comeback, and we were blown out in impressive fashion by Auburn.

Let's look back to the most recent similar season (thus far) - 2008.

We got blown out by 30 points by Florida in Week 5, going to 4-1. After beating the Cocks in Columbia, we came home and lost a shootout to UGA 52-38. Two weeks after that, we lost to Bama at home, in OT. THEN we needed the greatest comeback in history to beat Troy. The final 2 games saw Ole Miss handles us easily Tiger Stadium and we lost to the Hogs by 1 point in Little Rock.

Why am I saying all of this? Because the very next season we only improved our loss count from 5 to 4 - BUT, those 4 games were lost by a total of 23 points, then we went 24-3 the following 2 seasons.

This catastrophizing that LSU fans do after a loss is impressive. I'm not saying this wasn't a bad loss - and coupled with the woeful defensive production stats from both SEC games so far is very discouraging.

But to pretend like every team in the conference doesn't have to deal with these issues of youth, attrition, changing schemes, etc., is just blindness to the realities of modern, big league college football. Every team is trying to get better every week, every month, every year.

The best teams in the SEC-W right now are MSU, Ole Miss and Auburn. Other than Auburn, how unexpected is this development?

Saban went 9-3 in 2004. Would have been a 10-win season in the 12 game regular season format.
We were a last second Hail Mary away from the equivalent of one of Miles vaunted seasons (11-2) yet that is the season Miles defenders point to as proof the program wasn't in great shape when he took over.

People have been lying on this site about that season ever since they started having to defend Les Miles.

Oooh I love this game!!!

Do you remember the Oregon State game by any chance? Saban should still be sending Alexis Serna Christmas cards for sparing the defending NC team a home loss in the opening game. BUT BUT BUT Miles wins on talent alone and gets LUCKY!!!

How bout another Gator squad choking away a game in Zook's firing year? Add Marcus Randall to Saban's holiday card list for bailing him out off the bench after starting Russell before he was ready.

Troy State??? Where have I heard this before? Randall saves the day again with a last minute TD to avoid the upset. BUT BUT BUT LSU should never struggle with TROY!!!!

3 point home win over 4-7 Ole Miss squad in Cutcliffe's firing year. BUT BUT BUT struggling against OM is unacceptable!!! We have SO MUCH MORE TALENT!!!

Oh yeah, and let's not forget the THIRTY point beatdown against Georgia in FIFTH and last season in BR. But but but LSU should NEVER get embarassed in a game!!! SO MUCH TALENT WASTED!!!! He LOST THE TEAM!!!

So yeah maybe LSU could have gone 10-2 or 11-1, but we just as easily could have gone 5-7.

And you and yours have been lying about every season, game, and play since the Madonna headset in the Monday Night Football OT loss to Tennessee after Katrina and Rita.

Seriously, I love this game. Revisiting the Saban era to reveal the reality of those years to the revisionists never gets old!

Can we play 2001 and 2002 please soon!??

Miles and Saban have the same number of SEC titles since Saban took the Bama job in 2007.
