Opponents are certainly seeing the ball better from him as their BA/OBP/SLG has all increased by 10-50 points (BA/OBP being lowest) he is still striking out and walking people at the same rate but he certainly isn't locating as well as the previous two seasons.

And I think that data, tendencies and the fact that abs is forcing him to move the ball inside the zone more, are the cause of this. I think that abs is also why we are seeing a reduction in spin rate. The more it spins the less location you have.
Basically I’m saying that there are so many other factors at play this year that have nothing to do with his ability. And certainly not “mojo”.

ABS impact is minuscule. It’s ok to say his stuffed has ticked down and that it is not voluntary.

Ok, I obviously should have used a word like “effectiveness” or something else when I posed the question in the OP. Aside from a few shots at me I see there is a debate as to what the cause is or if it’s even true. All in all it seems to be a valid question.

This is reasonable and fair opinion. I won’t argue who is right because I don’t know. My opinion is there are compounding factors contributing to his decline in dominance.

I mean ABS isn't going to account for the loss of movement or speed, it can be justified as a reason if a slight increase or if he was a guy who lived on the edges but the last month he has a 5.67 ERA and he hasn't been going deep into games.
Since 5/17 Skenes has given up 28 runs over his last 9 starts over 47 IP. Maybe it is arm fatigue, maybe it is the league figuring him out, but it is a bit concerning

Fair enough. The question of what is causing this decline is certainly a reasonable question. I’m positive a lot of people are going to have a difference of opinion. The only people who actually know for sure are Paul and his staff.

Personally I think Paul is fighting through some discomfort and the fact this is the most legit Pirates team in awhile he would be a major blow to their playoff aspirations.

The lunch guys here in BR were discussing Skenes.
They reported that his velo was down, and his spin rate had steadily declined over the last nine games.
They surmised it was a technical issue, he was tired, or perhaps a sign of an injury.

Like Mickey warned Rocky, “woman weaken legs”.

He has been with Livvy since LSU, hasn't hurt him yet

I do think he’s being extremely smart.

Lane should definitely pull him.
Posted on 7/3/26 at 12:36 pm to Lige
He’s been passed by some other young pitchers. He’ll be a reliever in a couple of years

He probably has some arm fatigue Good news the pirates suck and he only has 8- 10 games left before he can rest that arm up.
