Paying the full buyout is going to end up being one of the best decisions they've made. In the long run, handling the situation with class and taking the highroad is going to be worth way more than $17 million.

Boosters ponied up for 17 million for a coach to not coach…This program does not have aTm money and if the boosters run out of money they're willing to pay we are fricked. What is so hard to understand about that?

What kind of strings are involved with the main boosters who gave the $17 million?

It’s not access to players as now they pay directly with NIL.

We are so concerned about what Ed knows that it’s a complete farce anyone brings up his love of LSU. If damage could have been worse than what they are paying Ed they still better be prepared as Ed is still likely to blow it up even if accidentally. Some blond will get mad and share all the crap he has told her. Or his sons,step-son, and other family or drunk buddies. About the only person who might not leak info is his ex-wife and that’s only if she is getting her share of the the buyout.

He got the guarantee that was not required to keep him here after 2019 then he disappeared or screwed around for most of 2020 spring & summer, let Pelini run loose (Miles was the buffer before plus Pelini followed Saban then), could offer nothing to fix situation during 2020 season, and then to “save” his job he hired 2 coordinators with no equivalent coordinating experience just like himself. Ed isn’t the type to want to prove anything when he has guaranteed millions waiting on him. It probably just provided more motivation to document the dirt than to coach.

Scott approved the contract, didn’t fix Ed being a future problem, and then pushed to pay it all while kissing Ed’s arse in public even though technically Scott got fleeced by Ed.

Woodward should be feeling more heat, but if he can write off $20 million in his mistakes with smiles and jokes I am sure he will turn big name hires into his own extension and guaranteed money before any of them even complete a single season at LSU.

Giving O the raise was dumb even after the best year ever. He wouldn’t have left the job - we didn’t need to give him a new contract.

Woody gets no pass for this ! No way he should have given O that lucrative of a contract. . Woody,s Ego, reputation and MO of being a mucho headhunter is catching up with him ! This idea some folks have of “so what it not my money “ is absolutely moronic ! It’s the same problem we have with our elected Officials now in Washington !

A pass for what?

Any coach who gets his team to win a national championship, the details of how that happened is for a different thread, but there is no AD who wouldn't give that HC (whoever he may be) a pay raise. The details of the amount is also for another thread.

Not sure how this is "catching up to him" because he approved a pay raise for a guy that went 15-0 in arguably the best season of college football ever.

It's what's happened after that, in subsequent seasons, with the HC that's the issue. And that's just the football program. In hindsight, maybe it wasn't a good idea with the amount but the reality is that regardless, Ed was going to get a pay raise just because of his team winning the national championship. It's the last 17 games and how Ed's teams have looked overall that is the issue under Ed's coaching.

I trust Woodward. He gets Mulkey who I never thought in a million years would leave Baylor after winning three national championships there, the Jay Johnson hire looks to be a home run (no pun intended)

He's not a goofball like his predecessor.

Of course they are paying him for his silence. Can you imagine the stories he could tell. Most of which are his own doing with the LSU officials turning a blind eye.

And then Aggie raised his pay so they must be fine with it. Stupid argument.

It's not your money or LSU's money. People with millions to throw away will be paying for this.

I can see O now in the Sonic commercials. “Come meet me down at the Sonic for the knuckle check special, it comes with a plain double meat cheeseburger, a rip away t-shirt and a 15 second fist fight you yours truly. Geaux Sonic”

I really don’t get the big fuss about buyouts. LSU generates enough money though TV to pay that out plus they are paying him in installments so that it doesn’t matter cause any issues in the new hire budget.

It’s a business and people running it have been doing it for years. Woodward is one of the best

True. But there is also a counterargument to that. At least the initial contract. He signed a contract to begin in the 2018 season with him being paid $7.5 million per year. This season he was #7 in annual salary and you have to expect that coaches' salaries will only continue to go up with the new TV contracts. So it was entirely possible A&M could have had a "deal" at $7.5 million in, say, 2025

Of course, Jimbo has ONE decent year there and the lose their minds by extending the deal and giving him a $1.5 million raise

Saban has caused somewhat of a Tiger Woods like effect in the SEC. Schools like LSU, A&M, Auburn, Florida, Georgia are DESPARATE to catch and overtake Alabama and thus, are willing to churn and burn through money and coaches to try to get there. That's given ALL of the hires at those schools probably bigger contracts than the market might otherwise dictate.

At a certain point, there is bound to be a financial limit to the various buyouts—because of realities or perception issues. Whether or not LSU is actually footing the bill, that could affect the program.

For you small thinkers out there...

Guilbeau playing to the small thinker crowd, shocker.
