Did I get in this thread before all the idiots came in hating on this young man?

Can you just tell us what country instead of keep saying the old country? Geez...

grueling qualifications and Olympic trials United States athletes must endure to earn a spot on the team.
Seems like we should have several spots that have to be qualified for (that's the American way after all) but maybe have a couple extra spots to give for athletes that are clearly superior but might have a minor injury or just a bad day during the qualifying. To keep guys like Mondo from doing this.

Remember the big Dan vs Dave campaign and then one didn't even make the team?

I'm not hating.
I'm just saying he's a traitor

It can’t possibly feel as good competing for Sweden as it would for the US
We'll get our own freaking pole vaulters damn it.
On any given day Sam Kendricks can vault right over his Rouse's bag boy looking arse.
Each down vote would be like a mini orgasm for me, so go right ahead.

We still keep in touch with the aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Old Country. When the World Cup is played, the U.S. takes a back seat to the Old Country

A primary benefit of competing for Sweden is that he doesn’t have to go through the grueling qualifications and Olympic trials United States athletes must endure to earn a spot on the team.
He has already qualified for the 2020 Olympics as a member of the Swedish national team, meaning he can focus on his upcoming Southeastern Conference and NCAA competitions, where he hopes to break more records, win another national championship and, most importantly, earn 10 much-needed points for an LSU squad with national championship ambitions.
Ill compete against my country because its easier on my schedule.

Criticizing is hating?

I think Sweeden pays for his travel, training, and coach (his father). The US wouldn't pay for any of these things
Seems like winning gold for the U.S. would be worth a lot more in endorsements in the long run though.

yep, Dan was the reigning World Champion Decathlete. Dude had an epic failure on the Pole Vault at Tad Gormley (site for the US Olympic trials) and failed to qualify for Barcelona.

Sounds like it goes like this: Sweden says we're honored to have you compete for us and we will pay for whatever you need to be successful and the US says you should be honored to compete for us, now pay your own way and we will tell you when we need you.

I mean, what's the difference? He's in individual competitions.

My point is that when you have a strong connection to another country, especially if it's the origin of your heritage, it would certainly feel as good, if not better, to compete for that country as it would the U.S. Don't get me wrong though. I'm American through and through, but I still have a sense of pride and passion for the Old Country
Im sorry but im not seeing how you have this strong connection with a place that you werent born into, or have done anything more than visit and hear stories about.
Im not being an a-hole, just dont see how you can have a stronger relationship with a country that you werent born in or currently reside in.

I really like this guy, and I’m glad he’s at LSU; but, I sure hope he is on team USA for the olympics.
It would be a shame if he competes against our country as opposed to for it.

I think the plan is for him to compete for the US in 2024
