guy doesn't get nearly enough credit for righting the ship that Archer and Hallman tried to sink...then of course he also let it veer off course in 98 and 99.
But winning 10 games in 1996 was a damn miracle with how bad that team looked in 94.
And he didn't beat terrible programs in the bowls either:
Nick Saban's MSU (45-26 Independence Bowl)
Clemson in the Peach Bowl
Notre Dame in the Independence Bowl

Bowl games aren't what they used to be. First off Bowl games used to be a reward for a good to great season. Now Bowl games are basically pointless to major programs that miss out on the playoff. Throw in good players that opt out and it just feels like a worthless game that is put together to make money for TV and schools.

2-0 in the independence bowl really isn’t an accomplishment

During that time in LSU football history, they were most definitely accomplishments. We were coming out of some of the worst years & people were thrilled to win. It was the beginning of what LSU football is today.
For the MSU game, tickets were about as hard to get as any of the national championship games. Fans would have probably gone to any bowl location, but the fact that it was in state & not a large stadium made for a real supply/demand issue.

And I think he is also responsible for getting waiver for LSU to wear white jerseys after new NCAA rule against home teams wearing white.

I can remember just hoping we got top 25 votes or made Sportscenter highlights back then. Any bowl was huge!

Archer had a recruiting problem, he just couldn't do it. But he was not a terrible coach. And he had a better winning percentage than Dinardo.

Hallman was a bad coach but that team had some talent that was still there in 1996. Those included, Alan Faneca, David Lafleur, Kenny Mixon, and Denard Walker. And that year 4 of the 7 losses were by 5 points or less. People still had a modicum of hope that Jaime Howard's arm talent would not be wasted.
Archer was a disappointment as a coach, Most people realized after the fact that it was too much too soon for Mike.
Curly was a repeated punch in the gut as a head coach.
Dinardo brought the Magic back but seemed to lose focus.

Harder to recruit when you had a guy in Baton Rouge calling you and the University racists.

The SEC bowl order in the 90s was Sugar, Citrus, Outback, then basically the rest of the bowls had their choice.
It wasn’t unusual to have a ranked team playing in the independence bowl during the 90s. LSU finished 13th in 1997.

I didn't live there so I don't recall that. Who was that in the early 90s?

Brought back the magic!
Undefeated in bowl games!
Undefeated against Nick Saban! It all started with Dinardo and Saban put us back in the elite level!
