It's extremely bland and outdated. There are no premium seats outside of the small number of court side seats (that are finally actually court side and not sponsorship board side seats). Have you ever been in the "gold club" or whatever they call it? It's essentially a shittier version of the champions club.

There is one level of concourse and it's the exact same around the entire perimeter of the building. There is really no SRO room. You can argue it's right below the top level of the stadium but ushers frequently move people (who aren't athletes) out of those areas. The entire concourse is closed off from the court. That's a major waste of space and viewing opportunity.

The only positive about the PMAC (outside from the exterior after it's power washed) is the fact that you can sit in the last row of the upper deck and not feel like you're too far away from the action. I would know, I did it as a student and watched Buddy Heild break our hearts.

not just that, the PMAC severely lacks for our teams - Volleyball/gymnastics are basically using closets as their team areas. Basketball had to build the practice facility just to get a decent lockerroom, not to mention that doesnt even have offices in there.

You're missing a few details. Here's the Advocate's article from yesterday that details everything.

LSU's new facility would be the only venue in town to host concerts, shows, and non-sporting events. Similar to Moody. The River Center would be repurposed to host conventions with a new convention hotel, etc.

LINK

quote:

The vision for the two buildings is laid out in a new ordinance scheduled to be introduced at the Metro Council on Wednesday.

The Tiger Athletic Foundation has begun soliciting proposals from developers to finance and build the new venue, which the ordinance describes as a "best-in-class" arena for sports, music, and entertainment activities "for the greater East Baton Rouge region."

quote:

LSU envisions the arena as the anchor of a mixed-use development that could include restaurants, a hotel and other businesses, Worsham said.

Worsham said the project is still in the exploratory phase. No site has been selected yet.

Before putting the project out for bid, LSU is waiting for the city-parish to approve the ordinance giving the new arena priority for big events, Worsham said. That will assure potential developers that they won't face major competition.

quote:

If Metro Council signs the agreement, it would stop the River Center from hosting live performances with more than 3,500 people and professional sporting events with more than 8,500 people, among other uses.

I stand corrected. Thank you for pointing that out. Now that's a more encouraging sign for a better arena.

Agreed, but just figure a way to do it right there, or expand PMAC in some way, etc.
to me building something off campus would just lose that college feeling, it doesn’t make sense not to build it in another location on campus. tear down the pmac or whatever but nothing off-campus

Build it and they will come is the reason sports arenas get built. It generates excitement and ads to the allure of coming to LSU. The thought is if you have nice things, you will get better recruits!

The PMAC is not a dump, but there are some serious criticisms which can be made:

1. The bathrooms are insufficient. If the place is even half full, the lines for bathrooms get comically long. You might as well just hold it because you’re going to miss a ton of the game waiting in line.

2. Concessions have completely gone to shite under Aramark, and this is an issue at all LSU venues. When you travel to other SEC venues that aren’t run by Aramark, you realize just how crappy our concessions are.

3. The seats are too far from the court. There’s something weird about the PMAC. I don’t know if it’s just the distance of the seats, the acoustics, or the lighting, but unless the place is 80% full, it feels super awkward to cheer or make noise. As a result, the atmosphere is either deader than a funeral or absolutely rocking with no in between.

4. There are no premium seats or suites which have become a mainstay for so many athletic franchises. There doesn’t appear to be any room in the design to add them to the existing structure.

5. The student section bleachers suck.

6. Leg room is a real problem, and I am fairly short.

With that said, the PMAC’s location is perfect.

The new Baylor Arena, while too small, has quite a bit of natural light coming in from a huge glass area at one end.

it was probably time for LSU to consider a new arena as well.
Don't let the "Bufoonish" Architects that came up with the Tiger Stadium SEZ Expansion (Off Centered "Great White Wall of Nothing" and the "FEMA Trailer" like structures at the top) anywhere near the design of a new PMAC. It will be an aesthetic disaster!

I've never had a problem with anything inside the PMAC. (Outside of the wretched excess COX logos that totally ruin the look of the Court and the PIM BS just like across the street)

I Could care less about concessions because I'm not a Food Glutton/Addict. I'm there to watch a Basketball game. I eat before the game and can certainly last 2 hours without anything.........

A lot of them do. Tulane for example.

We don’t have money for a new or a renovated PMAC. We have these football players over here we have to bid to get here and then bid again annually to keep em.

I agree somewhat with the original post in that I think it is just group think. I personally enjoy the PMAC with all purple seats. It's a fantastic arena but do with the bathrooms were larger. I don't but concessions so cannot address that. However, I find most people just want to complain - two years after a new stadium/arena is built, they will complain about something. From the exterior, I don't think it looks aged/dated at all. Unlike some venues that were built in the 70s, the shape/color etc really date it.

Always thought the PMAC should be painted in some combination of purple and gold. The gray concrete just looks so bland

This. Put the student section right on the court like it used to be. Then the environment will get better.

They moved the students because for most of the last 30 years, there were plenty of empty seats.in the student section, even when they were on the sideline. There may be just as many empty seats on the sideline now, but those folks are paying customers. From a business standpoint, it's a no-brainer. And the energy and creatiivty of the LSU's student section has dropped like a rock since the early '90s. They only seem to get their jollies now when Neck is played so they can chant "STTDB" like a bunch of high school sophomores.

Winning makes the environment better. The women's basketball game experience blows away the men's basketball experience right now because the women win and playing an exciting brand of basketball and the men don't. It's really that simple.

LSU is not a basketball school, meaning it's not THE priority. If the basketball team doesn't win, people aren't coming. If they win, people will come.

It’s not a dump. It needs a new ceiling rework bathrooms and a few other things.

We do not need a multi purpose arena, this one works just fine.

I don’t understand how in a state known for great food, the concessions around LSU are terrible. Even in Tiger Stadium, the concessions are poorly run and the food is disgusting.

Bathrooms are horrible and small. Only one door for enter and exit. Theres not enough of them either. The concourses are too small, and now they have vendors lined up in them so the walkways are much narrower. The arena is round and basketball/ volleyball courts are rectangular. So you are further away from the court. There is very little premium seating other than court side. No suites are club level. The seats are to close together, the pitch isn’t correct. Ascetically paints peeling inside and out

The PMAC just has a sorta depressing vibe to it

When I turn on college gameday on Saturdays for Men's basketball, I see a ton of bright, energized and exciting venues that are rocking.

The PMAC just seems like an arena you'd build if you were purposefully trying to have less energy in the building.

It doesn't look exciting, the fans aren't rowdy (or even look excited) and it seems dark.
