It's a useless token accolade that's made more useless by pinning it on players that don't deserve it.

#18 tradition

I know I'm in the minority, but I just do not like the "number traditions." Maybe it really does inspire the players. I don't know. Just too gimmicky for me.
BTW, retiring jersey numbers is lame too.

The tradition means nothing to me. Don’t care who wears it.

Giving #18 to Curry and Clark last is what cheapened it. Very subpar years by both and they are supposed to be leaders

I don’t think Curry was really expected to do much.

I still think Clark can play but was sabotaged by Pelini.

A few have said it, but this whole thing just isn't for the fans. That's completely okay too. 7 is used to recruit, and 18 is an in house badge of hard work.

The number deals have turned into an abomination. Last years 18s consisted of arguably the worst defensive player on arguably the worst defense in LSU history, while his offensive counterpart was a 3rd team upperclassmen RB who couldn’t get PT in one of the weakest RB rooms in recent LSU history. I know the 18 isn’t “suppose to be” the play-making star, but good god man.

I used to somewhat enjoy the number things when we had clear cut players that legit embodied the meaning/history/swag whatever of them, but ever since the legend of John Can’t Be Stopped Giles humbly turned his 7 over to the team trainers, it has just been a fiery train wreck rolling down the mountain.

I will say sting rocking 7 is the first time in a lonnnnnng time either has looked right and felt legit.

Uh Delpit was legit. Chase was going to wear it last year and that would have been legit as frick. Giles is the one real outlier in the 7 line.

I think what most fans do not understand is #18 tradition is for the TEAM, not fans not press etc.

Then they need to quit selling #18 jerseys everywhere especially to the kids...

Him and Dickson both wore it for multiple years without an issue.

Sophomore Delpit was legit. #9 Delpit. And chase didn’t wear it he quit so uhhhhhh and this is just my opinion, it should go to the best DB anyway. I don’t like it on offense unless it’s a generational talent on O along with the absence of a big time play maker in the secondary at the same time. And there have been way more outliers than the Texas Tech transfer but I think subjectively we would disagree on those.

name 1.
considering the #7 thing started with Peterson, who other than Giles is the outlier?

Regardless of whether whoever is here or not, still, I didn’t see a leader on that field last year. Sorry, it was definitely something the team was missing.

Just to piggyback off some other replies, 18 is for leadership. Matt Mauck was far from the best player on the field, but he was 10000% a leader.
Same with Jacob Hester, good player, but not the best player on the roster, but he was a leader.
18 is for the team, fans need to stop with their feelings over it. Opinions are good for discussion, but it doesn’t make it the right reason.

ETA now 7, you better mother fricking bring it when you wear that number. You’ll be remembered for what you did while you wore it no matter who you are. *cough cough* Giles.

Leadership doesn't necessarily mean elite play. That's what 7 is for (unless your last name is Giles).

Or anyone else who plays less than perfect. See Fournette, Chark, Stevens, etc. it demands perfection and anything that ever falls short—missed tackle, fumble, dropped pass, etc. and they all of a sudden are not worthy.

Hell, some don’t even deserve it simply for being an offensive player.

We would, because last year, which should have been Chase but COVID killed that) and Giles are it.

Oh hell I guess your right, personally my thoughts were that the poor season was due to losing around 35 impact players from the 2019 team due to graduation, leaving early for NFL, Covid and opting out.

A 4th year QB that finally got to start but first game was rocky, started to gel and got injured.

Star CB missed the first game

But hey we can now just blame O
