#18 isn’t what it once was, I think if there isn’t a clear choice then don’t have one for a year or two. I needs to be earned not given.

Him and Dickson both wore it for multiple years without an issue.

Sure, but I didn’t say that younger players getting it was a bad thing, just that if you wanted to make sure a situation like Chris Curry’s doesn’t happen, then just make it a senior thing.

To me, it seems like the whole thing has become a forced affair. IMO, unless there's a clear cut #18 for each year, it should just be skipped

Yup, or maybe a better solution is to only give the #’s 7 & 18 to players that are seniors or a junior who is without a doubt getting drafted very high like Stingley is!

That way the tradition continues without a black eye like this!

Where is the black eye? The players felt Curry was worthy of being a team leader last year. That didn't change because he saw the writing on the wall with two 4 star backs coming in on top of the players we have already and him deciding to go somewhere he will get to contribute.

Therese number traditions, especially the 18, are not for the fans

Jacob Hester. By Mauk's own account is was more of a joke than anything. It wasn't some significant "passing of the torch". It just was an available number. Hester had done absolutely nothing significant at that point to warrant any sort of "honor". That Mauk bestowed him with the "honor" is just revisionist history created for a good story. After Hester finished his great career he simply just gave the number to his friend, Richard Dickson.

Think that you are maybe underplaying some of it, there was ta thought to it being a hard worker and the leadership aspect came later. But it may be a bit overblown. It had become one of my favorite traditions though.

Since the inception of awarding two players, I think it began losing it's luster.

quote:

“It really kind of started as a joke,” Mauck said from Denver, where he is the team dentist for the Denver Broncos and in private practice. “We wanted to give it to someone who’s a good player but also has character and is a good person. We had no idea the way it would work out.”

The first to wear “18” when it was more than just a number was the oddest of all the choices, but so far probably the most deserving. It went to Jacob Hester, who at the time had just signed that February.

“I just knew him from being recruited, and he seemed like the type of guy we were looking for,” Mauck said.

I think #18 is actually legitimate. It was never about giving it to the best player, the biggest name, etc. I've always thought of it as essentially a captains patch. #7 on the other hand, I'm not a fan of.

They should have never made it an offense and defense thing. Now it feels like everyone gets a trophy thing

It seems like the type of tradition they would want to reserve for a senior.
