Seems like the simplest solution would be to give it to a player in his last year of eligibility to avoid awakened situations like that

It was cheapened when O & Co decided we needed two.

yep from the beginning it was all about THE guy that most represented what it meant to be a Tiger.

now we suddenly have two of those guys every single year.
and they miraculously have played on opposite sides of the ball every year.

Couldn’t agree more 18 has been diluted

I think they screwed it up when they started giving it to 2 players every year. It should be one guy, not one on offense and one on defense. Pretty soon there will be an 18 for specials teams too. I can see it now, 2022 season and your #18 is long snapper Quentin Skinner.

I really like the idea of 18 going to a Dan “Rudy” type player. Someone who had to grind it out after facing setbacks.

In someways, Curry fit that. He came in with more heralded players, and as a result only saw limited snaps. He then really shined against OU when he got his shot.

This. It also made no sense to give it to an offensive lineman who can’t even wear the number. Cushenberry was a model Tiger, but it’s still dumb.

18 should be worn by captain or leader on the team. I believe that is what Mauck meant when he asked Heaster to where it. After Heaster I think it was Richard Murphy. Murphy was never a great player at LSU. He was good just not a super star.

Point 18 never was about greatness in playing its about the person inside the jersey. Leadership.

That's what I thought it was/is about. 7 is the special athlete number.

Honestly still perplexed how CC got the jersey# anyway.

This, more than anything.

That said, it is a completely forced "tradition" that started with no significance whatsoever. Mauk left after the 2003 season and then gave the number to incoming freshman, Jacob Hester. By Mauk's own account is was more of a joke than anything. It wasn't some significant "passing of the torch". It just was an available number. Hester had done absolutely nothing significant at that point to warrant any sort of "honor". That Mauk bestowed him with the "honor" is just revisionist history created for a good story. After Hester finished his great career he simply just gave the number to his friend, Richard Dickson. There wasn't really any great significance in that moreso than there were just buddies. After that they decided to start the "tradition".

It's basically an effort to try to copy Texas A&M's 12th man tradition (which has deep historical roots in that program dating back decades). But if the LSU TEAM/Players find the tradition to be significant, then by all means keep it. And if it is supposed to encompass more than simply on field production then I don't think Curry not having a remarkable season...then transferring really "cheapens" it. If his teammates felt he embodied the characteristics of the player who should wear the number than that is all that really matters.

I do, however, think it is dumb to have TWO guys (one on each side of the ball) wear the number. If it is going to be of such great significance the only ONE guy on the team should have it

This!

It's for the TEAM!

But I'd say, not much thought went in to last years selection of #18

The 18 thing jumped the shark so long ago and it’s origin of being “passed down” from Mauck to Hester is a hilarious fib

Like im sure the outgoing National title winning QB wanted one of the lowest rated incoming freshmen recruits to inherit his number because he just knew the guy would go on to represent

7 is still kinda cool if we can pretend like the Giles instance never happened

There should only be one #18 and should be voted on by players. Same thing with #7. Nobody ask for it.

Why? Just because he transferred to find a better opportunity to get some playing time and hopefully find a way to the nfl ,doesnt mean he didnt do everything the right way and it doesnt mean he wasnt a leader. Just look at him in the weight room,he was a monster and you dont get that big without working hard.

It really doesnt have alot to do with on the field performance. That's supposed to be number 7.

Dont be surprised if they only have 1 18 next year.

Beast mode lol, probably was given #18 because of the effort he showed in practicing, leadership, and staying even know, everyone including him in the end knew he would never be the man in the backfield

After this we beat Florida and Ole Miss. Curry wasn't the most talented, which is why he's transferring out, it happens. But he seemed to have the leadership and love for the program to deserve 18, he's not transferring because he hates LSU or anything.

What's funny is you people actually believe this when its the exact opposite of the truth. Burrow turned down 18 so Ed gave it to Chaisson to try and recruit his former high school teammate... but yeah the team really loves it!
