I'm still in wait and see mode.
Johnson - certainly talks the talk and has a nice track record to deserve the benefit of the doubt - very encouraging that he got an All American to come with him
Kelly - complete wait and see for me - he did a nice job at Washington under Meggs, practically a legend in those parts, but the competition here is on another level - meh at Arizona St and, yes, I get that he had some roster issues there
Fitzgerald - did a nice job at DBU but really hard to tell how much of that can be attributed to him when Heefner is such a stud
This group is inheriting a nice roster, albeit with some obvious holes that will need to be developed quickly or covered up with JUCO/portal. In the short term, I really don't have a ton of concern with the staff because of what they're being handed and have at their disposal. I just want to wait and see how much of a difference they can really make.

quote:This is probably what Nap is getting at. These hires are very good and possibly even better than that, but they’re absolutely going to get credit for some of the talent Cain has had in the pipeline for years.
Cain wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire

The real question is how good of a third base coach is he?

It’s not some stretch to say that Mainieri didn’t have the strongest track record of hiring assistants. Cain wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire
PM initially had some great hires, but he got complacent and went with young, unproven ex-players.

Coached third base and is shown hitting infield and giving instruction to outfielders. Seems to be a personable guy
Those aluminum bleachers look way too familiar.

Cain got that same kind of credit for Cannizzaro’s recruits.
And to be fair I thought Cain was better than most on this board. It’s not, or at least shouldn’t, be the recruiting coordinators job to build the roster. That’s what the head coach is for. The recruiting coordinator is there to build relationships, evaluate and recruit within the parameters the head coach sets for the roster. Cain could have and would have been great under the right management which is why him at Texas A&M isn’t nearly as laughable as this board would like to make it.

Good hire. Impressive job at Dallas Baptist. Imagine what he can do at LSU.

Not yet, but it’s probably not coincidental that at the time I’m reading this the OP has 181 upvotes—and two downvotes.

I am not familiar with his resume, so I will not comment on it being good or not.
HOWEVER, if our staff like this guy, then I like him too. Let's ride!

Cabrera, Watson and Smith for starters.

He did. I was just trying to hit the high notes.
With how early kids are being recruited these days Canni was likely the first guy to reach out to every kid on our roster outside of maybe this years freshman class.

quote:Nobody that even halfway follows gave Cain credit for any of these. Watson and Smith were freshmen in 2017 meaning they were already on campus when Cannizzaro left. They signed in the Fall of 2015 so they may not have even committed to Cannizzaro originally either.

If he gets paid he will. He’s not getting paid at Texas.

I’m almost certain Smith committed as a sophomore, which would have been to Javy

And no one that even halfway follows give fitzy credit for guys like Pearson, Selvidge and Jensen.
If we’re talking about the people who pay attention then you’re arguing about something that isn’t going to happen

I just looked at guys who were freshman in Cains first two years as RC. I couldn’t even begin to pull this shite out off the top of my head.

He isnt getting camp money at texas? Because thats basically all we could offer
Posted on 7/7/21 at 8:26 pm to CottonWasKing
quote:So now you’re essentially agreeing with my original point. The people that question Cain’s recruiting, like the comment you made about not setting the world on fire, do so because of a lack of talent in the upper classes. While this year’s freshmen class, which was the best in several years, is the first one in which every player committed on Cain’s watch.
With how early kids are being recruited these days Canni was likely the first guy to reach out to every kid on our roster outside of maybe this years freshman class.
Then the 2021 and 2022 classes are much more similar to 2020 than those in the years prior.
