Fantastic job with this. I don’t agree with everything you said about Wade and his era but your posts are
fair and thought out.. We need more posters like you.

He is very quick to call timeouts, watched an intveriew and jokingly said he sometimes had to ask assistant Casey Long if a 4-0 run was too soon and "bad shots" will get you yanked from the game with a quickness under CMM. Ja Morant said he really learned a lot and it humbled him to get yanked by CMM.

Besides the excellent background on KJ and DJ, that was my favorite part to read. Wade would roll with his starters as if they were promised roles in their recruiting. You can't earn respect from players if you won't pull them when they aren't performing well. I remember when Tremont got benched to start one game. While it was all of 5 minutes to start the game, his play immediately improved after being pretty bad to start the year.

One thing, I believe the scholarship limit is 13 in basketball. That should give us 7 left if we plan on self imposing a 2 scholarship reduction this year.

ETA: From the highlights in the tournament I didn't see a lot of dribbling at the beginning of the offense. Is that also what you saw against Marquette?

I just don't see how we really know the "current state" of the program until we know how bad the sanctions will be. I think we're going to be a bottom feeder for AT LEAST 2 years, but that's just my wild guess. We'll know more when the sanctions come down.

Roster
Yes all 11 scholarship players from last year have left the team.

Do you have any insight if CMM has any chance at all in retaining any of our players from last year or is everyone gone?

A whole page of informative text is better than one sentence of idiotic whining and melting. Plus you might learn something. Win-win

So the most likely by far is Shareef. Yes part of it is the family connections, but more than that after the heart operation/recovery and then the injuries when he got to LSU. I do not know this but I think he could not want to start all over again. And it would be special he could leave his own mark on the history of LSU basketball, obviously not in the same way as his dad but if he was the only holdover and helped lead the team I think he fits the type of big CMM looks for. Colbert does as well but he was leaving regardless not a fan of BR and he and some assistant coaches did not see eye to eye, basically Taz had to baby him to get him to stick with just this year.

Brandon Murray is a guy that fits perfectly in the combo off guard role what CMM looks for but he is unfortunately gone, and is with the transfer portal a lot of guys remember how fun recruitment was do not think we can get him back. Now I did hear this from an assistant Devin Ree one of the decommitted recruits is not out of the question to maybe get back in the fold but I would say unlikely, he was extremely close with Bill Armstrong and CWW and the other SEC players have too much time now ahead of CMM.

I wish all would stay but just being objective the guy that could if he stayed and make a lot of money for himself is Gaines. There were rumblings he did not like BR, probably ends up at UGA or GT. But that full court chaser role I mentioned, not comparing him to Ja Morant they are actually very similar athletically and demeanor wise you could see a lot in Eric that you would in Ja. That I think CMM would be perfect to get through to him, he was probably going to transfer at the end of the year regardless there were 3-4 guys that were transferring anyways did not matter who the coach was.

So my best guess is that Shareef stays, and Justice Williams would be my second best guess. Wilkinson is tough because Wade and CMM recruit a different kind of athlete. I think Wilkinson could be persuaded to stay but CMM probably would want his own guy.

Thanks for responding. I’m an LSU basketball super fan. My fandom for basketball runs deeper than football surprisingly. I was gutted by how the Wade situation shook down and similarly hate the hypocrisy and coordinated attack on Wade. With that being said, I fully support CMM and the new regime.

I love our players and hope they would all stay, but realize that’s a pipe dream. The betrayal I feel as a fan from our AD I’m sure is ten fold worker felt by the players. I think we acquiesced to the outrage mob and ran off a potentially transformative coach, but hopefully CMM can also put his stamp on the program.

I’m sure this is also a pipe dream, but any chance Adam Miller stays? I feel terrible for him and would love to see his transformation here as a Tiger. Outside hope from me is he might buy in to the development in same manner you suggested Gaines could potentially go to the next level with the right kind of coaching.

Thanks again for writing!

I assume one of the South Carolina guards in the portal after frank martin was fired

Jermaine Cousinard or Devin Carter. Would prefer Carter but Cousinard was technically their leading scorer

Cousinard kind of in the Pinson mold. Steady Veteran player without much ceiling

He benched Naz in the OOC portion of the 18-19 season when Naz decided all he wanted to do was be a 6'10" below average 3 point shooter vs. going inside to score and get offensive rebounds. LSU shot the ball well vs. a good Florida St. team, but still lost in OT because they got killed on the glass. Naz had like 2 rebounds the entire game...despite the game going to OT. After that, LSU became a dominant offensive rebounding team which was a huge reason they were such a highly efficient offensive despite struggling to shoot from outside. Wade's philosophy was to allow his best players to be aggressive on offense. Sometimes that was going to result in terrible shots. But he figured with great players the good will eventually outweigh the bad. For the most part (at least offensively) he was right. The ONLY guy in his 5 years that seemed to play far too many minutes that his actual production suggested he should was Efton Reid this year. LSU was a much better team when Days and Eason were on the floor together.

Self imposing scholarships would be a dumb decision. Now, if LSU only able to find 11 or 12 guys that they really like and they want to call leaving the 13th scholarship open a "self imposed penalty", that's fine. But I wouldn't turn down a really good player as a preemptive penalty when it probably wouldn't have any mitigating effect anyway.
