Now in age of playoffs when will these games be done away with, Losers of these games likely eliminated from playoffs, unless it’s Alabama.

Not in a 24 team playoff. It is a meaningless extra game, so it should be taken away.

Not unless they were not going to be in anyway, or they are in a weak conference and lose to a team not even on the bubble. Bubble teams will depend on their showing and who the other bubble teams are.

My guess is next season.

The 24 team playoff effectively moves the postseason calendar up one week according to the big connected talking heads. The current thinking is that Conference Championships are incompatible with a 24-Team CFP.

The decision to do away with them has been one of the bigger financial sticking points of the 24 team model.

Reportedly the deal is go to a 24 team playoff and those conferences that have championship games get compensated for their lost revenues. I haven’t heard if that is multi year compensation our 1 year only.
This should be the last year for conference championships.

The 24 team playoff is why they are (likely) going away

Agreed. Particularly in the 12 (soon to be 24) CFP era. It's just as much a burden as it is a "reward". In 2017 Auburn in is the CFP after having beaten both Georgia and Alabama in the regular season. The "reward" was a rematch with Georgia...which Auburn lost. It allowed Alabama to get into the CFP by doing nothing.

Last year BYU was in the CFP...until it had to play the Big 12 championship game. Miami is at home not in the CFP...until BYU loses the championship game.

The funny thing to me is the people whining about losing the conf. championship games "because of money" (i.e. the expansion of the CFP) not understanding that conference championship games were created SOLELY to generate money. It was an extra game the conferences could sell to the TV networks.

In the 24 team playoff all games are meaningless

The expanded playoff is the biggest sleight of hand in forever.

All it does is eliminate actually meaningful championship games in the form of conference championships and replace them with renamed irrelevant bowls that more people will watch because "1st round playoff" sounds more compelling than "Liberty Bowl".

The networks will increase revenue. The NCAA will increase revenue.

And it will happen because the masses will fall for watching the Independence Bowl instead of conference championships because muh...playoffs.

This is probably the last year of championships.

Playing in them will likely be viewed in many situations as disadvantageous inasmuch as they could lead to injury without altering the team's position practically speaking. Let's say LSU finishes 10-2 but is not in the SECCG. Would that hurt their position?

If UGA finishes first in the SEC, and LSU, Bama, UK, UF, Ole Miss, TX, and TN all finish tied for second at 6-3, would LSU make the playoff if they lost to UGA in the SECCG?

You could thrown Mizzou and OK into the mix, as well. If the second place SEC team is tied at 6-3, the SEC may only get 4 into the playoff. I don't see them taking three 6-3 teams and one 6-4 team. I don't see them taking a 6-4 team at all.

They aren't going to leave out one of the SECCG teams and put in 3 teams that did not qualify for the SECCG.

In that scenario, Florida goes to the title game

If LSU makes it this year, they should opt out and let the SEC know they’ll be focusing on the playoffs

The way it SHOULD work is to have the conference champs have a playoff. Win your conference, and you make the playoff against the other conference champs

I rather see LSU win the SECCG than a midweek playoff game late in January against some team I couldnt care less about.
I feel differently about basketball and baseball.

Id rather the SEC drops out of the CFP and holds a four team SEC series. That would be so much better. Play round 1 first week of December and hold the SECCG Jan 1.

That would outshine the CFP by a lot.
