I was one that wanted him to start but I also said JJ knows more than me, was just my opinion. But when Skenes went out to the bullpen my wife asked me if he was coming in and I said no, that's just CJJ fricking with the FL players. Loved it.

It looked to me like Skenes was doing his normal day 4 workout, but in public. If he entered the game, I figured he was going to throw as many pitches as he does in his normal workout.

This is such a boss move!

I am less knowledgeable about baseball than most people here, let's get that straight right off the bat.

I thought that Skenes would pitch last. And I actually caught on to the mind games.

I figured he would pitch the 9th inning regardless of the huge lead. I was pleased that he did not. Not for his arm sake but he has enough accolades and doesn't need more pats on the back.

Great opportunity to give the lime light to someone else and look to the future. Whole heartedly agree with every pitching decision made last night.

Team sports should be treated as team sports.

Most brilliant part of not using Skenes is showing Florida we didn’t need him to beat them in a 3 game series.

He had said Bertman gave him advice, and to not start Skenes. I would bet the other bullet points came from Bertman as well.

Or maybe just MAYBE our current coach is the one making the calls….

Also, I LOVE Skip, dude is the GOAT. But cmon we all saw the way he used pitchers, he would’ve started Skenes and let him throw 120 more pitches

Yep.

- CJJ wanted Florida to see him jog to the bullpen so they truly realize the game was over.

Is there confirmation that Johnson made the choice to hold back his good pitchers at the time when the grand slam knocked us down. That wind-aided homer was a big surprise, and it was downhill from there. Of course, Johnson had the arms to change and go all in to catch up, but he resisted and now it's all history.

I would like to know if Johnson made that decision immediately upon the Slam.

Like the Burrow time, this is as good as it gets.

He wanted him to get the last 9 outs rather then the first 9 outs

As for game 2, basically yes. He said in his press conference he knew there was no choice but to win Game 1. They simply HAD to win game 1. He knew he was screwed in game 2 with no option of using your top 3 starters

As for Skenes, I don’t think it was an intimidation factor for Skenes in the 5th. He was doing his normal routine to be ready for the 8th. It takes a while to be ready to go and he was doing that progression. They didn’t have a crystal ball to know if the game would be within 5 or 6 in the 8th. So get ready gradually like normal. When they saw there was no need even in the 9th, his day was done.

Hey, Skenes got to see what it was like to warm in the bullpen.

You probably had 90% of our "smart" baseball fans who would have done the exact opposite.

When thinking about skeenes playing this scenario never popped in my head. Guess that’s why I’m a fan and not a coach. But it’s a really valid point why not start him.

You didn’t have the info that he’d go only 30 pitches even if dealing. I get it. A lot of fans were saying numbers up to about 80 pitches

It’s almost as if Jay has way more information than the average fan who just tuned in a week ago. He knows more about baseball than everyone on this board combined. Time to let the man do his thing and trust it’s for the best

There is nothing special in Jay's strategy here. An ace on short rest after a very long outing in a playoff situation calls for one inning of work only if absolutely necessary. A save situation would have been the best chance to see him. This is baseball 101. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

It's not the 1920s anymore. In the 1926 World Series, Grover Cleveland Alexander pitched a complete game 6 for the Cardinals, went out and got trashed, showed up the next day with a hangover, went into the game in the 7th and pitched 2 and a third innings of shutout baseball to beat the Yankees. But this is 2023, not 1926. JJ had the right and standard strategy for Skenes

Loves that he gave some inside thought and it was brilliant.

UF saw him go under the stadium, then come out to the pen and you know they knew he was preparing to come in. It got in their head that the game was a 7 inning game.
