Championship teams require more than just "game manager" at QB

For a long time, we have talked ourselves into the notion that we didn't need a great QB, just a good game manager, to be able to compete for championships. I think in today's version of the game, we probably need something a bit more than just a manager. Defenses have evolved and can now combat multiple offensive schemes, including the read-option, hurry-up teams. Etling has been a good game manager, for the most part; a little less focused in the 2nd half, but he's managed the offense, relatively speaking. It will be tough to become an upper echelon offense, however, with just a game manager against some of the competition that lies ahead.

You frickin serious?

Do you watch football?

We won in 2003 and 2007 with that. It’s not like Flynn and Mauck were Heisman candidates.

Alabama won last year with a guy that is fixing broken Blizzard machines at McDonalds now.

We've had some explosive plays in the passing game so I'm not sure what your point is.

And while you're at it, name who we should be starting at quarterback instead of Etling.

No, they don't, but if you're going to have a game manager at QB, you need a better defense than we've had thus far this year.

DE isn't the textbook definition of game manager QB. He's made some plays where there was none, and made some tough plays too. Heckuva start. He could be passing for 300 yards by December.

-2003 and 2007 were long ago.
- Alabama QBs in their championship years have all developed into something more than managers.
- I'm not knocking Etling; he may very well turn out to be someone who grows into the position like Blake Sims or Greg McElroy
- The "Broncos"??? Really???

Jacob Coker was no better than Flynn or Mauck.

SEC rankings for Bama qbs in National title years

QB rating

1. 2009-4th
2.2011-3rd
3.2012-1ST
4.2015-4th

passing yards

1.2009-8th
2.2011-3rd
3.2012-6th
4.2015-4th

Passing TDs

1.2009-7th
2.2011-4th
3.2012-3rd
4.2015-4th

So, to say they are getting by with pure middle of the pack game managers seems disingenuous. They are having above average QB play in the SEC
