re: Can we talk about Breaux and Mckinley

Breaux reminds me of a young Wingo. Undersized, but like you said, uses leverage and aggression to make up for being smaller.
He’s only a true freshman so hopefully he won’t be undersized for much longer. Our strength and conditioning program should turn him into a monster.

Hoping for a Davon Godchaux-type career out of him

Good comp. I was using recency, but I like the Godchaux comp.

Further evidence that sometimes tigerdroppings needs to shut the frick up about certain position groups during the offseason
Its almost like people here forget that athletes can progress over time with new coaching and schemes..

"Not sure what happened on their long run on 4th and 1,
Major Burns and Sage Ryan happened. Also horrible attempted tackle by Gilbert."
I was about to say the same thing. Burns had the first miss at the line of scrimmage.

Blake Baker getting paid but ROI is rising fast

BK said that at one point they were 7 freshmen on the filed on D. At least I think he said that. Breaux and McKinley are making major contributions.
I know I saw Breaux, Reliford, McKinley, Atkins, Woodland and Spears so that checks out. Not to mention sophs like Weeks and Womack playing well.

Baker and Davis are superstars

Not sure what happened on their long run on 4th and 1, or those QB power dives that worked a couple of times, but overall the Middle of the D held well enough to win the game.
Stark contrast from last year where opponents would run the same play back to back, daring us to stop it. Which we usually didnt

It’s crazy how much better the freshman DTs are this year than the three veteran DTs from last year who got drafted into the NFL. (Maason Smith, Mekhi Wingo, Jordan Jefferson). Those guys were awful (especially Maason Smith) and they each got drafted anyway based on potential.
Wingo and Jefferson were great for us. what are you smoking?
It was because our Dline coach had a heart attack and we had to last minute fill the position. Plus we had a clown at DC.
We have always had the guys. Not always had the staff

Gilbert’s missed tackle was a bit worse though.
Gilbert may have had a game saving tackle on the 3rd down run Ole Miss that forced a FG before our game tying drive

These three....... I know there are some good plays made between the three of them, but I'll be happy when they're gone. Hopefully the safety position gets better by then.

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say any DT was great for us in 2023. That was one of the worst defensive efforts I’ve ever seen last season.

Not young guys, but I also want to shout out Gio Paez and Paris Shand at DT. Paez has been so big as that cornerstone DT that you can count on to be out there every week just doing his job, filling the right gaps, taking on multiple blockers to free up other guys to make tackles, being the veteran leader and just doing the dirty work. We HAD to have that after Guillory went down, and Gio stepped up. Props to him.
And props to Shand who’s found a nice role sliding inside on passing downs and getting a lot of inside pressure. He’s undersized for a DT, but has used that to his advantage and has used his quickness to get in the backfield, altering or blowing up a lot of plays, whether he winds up making the play or not. I have no idea how many sacks or TFLs he has, but whatever those numbers, he’s affected way more plays than that.
Of course he wouldn’t be able to do that if Savion hadn’t made a huge jump and turned into an All-SEC-ish DE opposite Swinson, getting both a ton of QB pressures AND containing the edge infinitely better than he did last year. And Reliford coming in as a true freshman and being ready from almost Day 1 to back up Savion allowed Baker/Bo to find a creative way to use Shand’s skills positively.
Like, Shand is probably a bit of tweener. At the very least he’s not as good of a SDE as Savion is right now. So if this were last year’s staff, he’d probably only exist to give Savion a breather a couple series a game and hope he didn’t frick up until Savion could get back in. This staff has taken Shand’s uniqueness and turned it into a positive and picked their spots to send him in to go get after the passer. He couldn’t do that as 280 pound DT 40-50 snaps a game. But he can do it for 15-20. Or 20-25.
I’m just so impressed with how this staff has not only developed young guys, but gotten everybody to buy in, identified what they do well, and created a role specifically for them to keep them all engaged and get the absolute most out of what is not a very talented SEC defensive interior.

Washington gets manhandled and pushed 5 yards down field. This lets their C get a clean block at the second level which keeps Penn from making the tackle. Sure, at least one of the safeties needs to make that tackle, but it's a lot harder to do when you have an offensive lineman in between you and the ball carrier.
Washington has been a weak link on the D-line, a lot of big running plays come with him in the game.
He's still young (RS So), so I'm not writing him off, but getting blown off the ball on 4th and 1 is not what you want to see from your DT.

What?! Wingo was very good and Jeffersom was solid. Rest of the line (rush ends esp.) were crap

I wish he had one more year so bad. He oozes potential and I think he'd be great if given the chance to play 80+% of the snaps.

I talked up Breaux a lot before the season. He's making me look like I know what I'm talking about. Lol
