I don’t understand this. And will never never ever like that BK receives the ball when his team doesn’t score until halftime, and has always stArted the second half behind. I have never seen a coach win the coin toss and elect to receive. I so hate this.

He did it EVERY TIME at ND... and the opposing coach ALWAYS deferred. Meaning ND always started with the ball and the opposition always started Q3 with the ball. It's because Kelly is a self-proclaimed offensive genius. It's actually because of his hubris. It's so refreshing that his successor defers (like last night).

I get it if you have a great offense and want to put pressure on your opponent immediately. We don't have that. Our defense is clearly our strength. I'd rather them set the tone on the first possession.

There is data to support deferring to the 2nd half. When he kicked the XP against FSU, he relied on data. Just sayin.

How? Either they get it at the beginning OR after halftime.

Listen, LSU offense is horrible. We should always elect to start the game on our strength. Our D is better than our O. Offensive teams have no issue electing to take the ball 1st. Obviously we're not of that caliber of offense. It was a mistake.

With our special teams play, this isn’t a sure thing.

He did say early in the season that the decision to receive if they win the coin toss was based on data/analytics...

By electing to receive. You open yourself to the dreaded “2 straight” scoring possessions at end end of 2nd & start of 3rd, which Tennessee obliged and basically ended the game. If LSU’s strength is defense that’s how he should have started.

In the big picture of losing by 27 points, the coin toss seems to be a very minor issue.

There is no advantage to receiving or defending. You are making a mountain out of…well, much less than a mole hill.

If you have a weak offense and a strong defense, or the other way around, I can understand putting a small amount of value on this. But at the end of every game, if luck, and game management is equal, both teams will have the same number of possessions. It’s what they do with them that matters, not when they have them.

Years ago most teams that won the coin toss elected to receive. In more recent years this strategy has changed.

Does it really matter.
Tenn is head and shoulders above LSU as are most of the teams we have left. Maybe we can carve out 2 more wins

The OP never equated the decision to the Tennessee game. He is just wondering why he chooses this route.

I understand it perfectly-- it's all about taking an aggressive posture early on. Opening the game up 7-0 is always a good strategy.

What I can't understand is the poor execution. That opening fumble set the tone for the game, and LSU never recovered.

I went back into the archives and noticed Arnsparger usually took the opening kickoff after winning the toss

I was completely fine with taking the ball first. You take a possession away from Tennessee and, maybe, jump out to a lead first. Of course, you have to catch the F’ing ball on the kickoff!!!!

That was the first game in a while where LSU was shite from literal start to finish
