Mutual agreement. Things had gone stale for everyone.
It didn’t matter that Nolan Cain was recruiting good players (got lucky with covid and injuries with the last batch). Paul was still putting Bianco in center and hitting Safford second.

I wouldn’t go that far. But he was pushed out. Omaha is equivalent to a trip to the Elite 8 in Basketball. Would a basketball Blue Blood like Kentucky or UNC be content with 3 trios to the Elite 8 in 11 years and “mutually part ways? No chance. Same applies in PM’s case.

Basketball is different. Calipari had been to 2 in the last 8 years prior to leaving for Arkansas.
Paul was pushed out of the program. Paul was extremely fortunate that the 2020 season was cancelled. That was going to be an all time bad LSU team. They were not making the tournament. Everything about LSU baseball had been trending, generally, in the wrong direction since the end of the 2017 season. From player meetings to coach change decisions. It was a cluster frick.
If you’re interested in seeing how he runs a program, google “Paul Mainieri South Carolina 247” and I’m sure the article about this past year at USC will pop up. I’m on mobile and can’t link at the moment. It’s astounding. I’m surprised he’s not out at USC after this year if 20% of it is true.
It was not a mutual decision. He was fired. LSU gave him a dignified way out and he took it. Trust me, they were prepared to do it the other way if they were required to.

Hopefully you guys aren’t setting the bar at that point. If we are lucky enough to get two to three more would be an unbelievable accomplishment. Highly unlikely and near impossible to do nowadays
If he gets 2 in 4 years here especially in the current environment with college sports being a shite show there’s no reason to think that 6 total is off the table as an ultimate goal. Just one season at a time.
And yes expectations are that high because we had a coach get to 5 before. Alabama didn’t lower expectations after Bear. They got someone who equaled him in titles.

There is absolutely no comparison to the college baseball (and college sports in general)- world then and now. With the parity in the SEC and across the entirety of the NCAA, the portal, NIL to a degree, the rising overall popularity of the sport nationwide- No, the expectations that Skip set for the program can in no way be matched currently. JJ has proven he’s got what it takes to make us a success at a high level. We should enjoy the ride. We’ll get to Omaha often enough but the landscape is vastly different and calls for a different level of expectations.

But he should be fired almost every year. LOLl

Well, that would take 6, which would put him past Skip. So, yeah, I'd say he'd make the cut.
Doing it in this era of college baseball would put him ahead of Skip even with the same amount of NC

I’m saying if he can win 2 in 4 at his age and our resources there’s nothing stopping him from continuing. If he can do it this year he proves he can do it with more “average” talent. It could be argued 2023 happened because we had two of the best players ever in program history at the same time. That won’t ever happen again most likely. But winning with the average amount of talent LSU has in a typical year shows it’s no fluke.
I’m not saying he should be fired if he doesn’t win another natty. I’m just saying I think if he goes 2 in 4 suddenly 12 total titles is very attainable given his age.

My comment is more that people are using that to slander Jay. I understand and I think O to a certain degree understands that he had to go but what he did for us will never be forgotten and he will alway be a legend in my book.

Best all-around college baseball coach in America hands down! Since Skip.

He was NEVER "Ed O" because he had success at another major program. But there was at least some reasonable basis to question if he was a truly great coach, or, to some degree, a byproduct of favorable circumstances. He took over a solid Arizona program with good players and immediately led them to the CWS championship series. After that, the results slid downward for the next 3 seasons. At LSU he had a great core in place to build on ahead of the 2023 season. Then, with much of that core gone, he struggled just to reach the NCAA Tournament last year.
That is all out of the window now and whatever previous doubts anyone had should be gone. It's "easier" at LSU than most places simply because no program puts more resources into baseball than LSU. But that has been the case for a LONG time and still between 2001 - 2022 LSU only won one National Championship. With two NCs in the trophy case in just 4 years he's unquesionably one of, maybe the best, HCs in the sport.

I'm sorry still bs. Still had Arizona finish 1st in their conference 3 seasons atter taking them to the Championship. It's still Arizona.
His LSU team following the Championship was pretty inexperienced due to losing so many starters. They had a tough schedule, but turned it on when it mattered most and were a catch late in the game away from still hosting a favorable Super Regional. In a down year.
What he did his first season with no legit SEC caliber starting pitching was every bit as impressive than what he did in 23.
It annoys me greatly anyone tried to discredit what Jay did in 23 because he had great players. LSU does not win a Championship without the guys he also brought in. I have had to defend him against idiots wanting others coaches over him.
I can't believe anyone was worried about last season. I expected that given how many people left. They had like what? 1 returning every day batter return to the lineup?
