So your team is built for one game? Besides you don’t think guys like Phelps and Ford couldn’t shut Higgs down? If you think that a Higgs vs Phelps is a better matchup than Pistol vs MJ you have no idea what you’re talking about. And again if Jordan is taking away Pistol you’d want CJ to makeup for the offense you’d lose and who would also be a much better matchup for you vs the Carolina point guards. College Basketball isn’t like the NBA, there are schematic options to consider first. You don’t play far inferior players for the sake of matchups. Choices like that would get your doors blown off.

Maravich, Shaq, Petit, Macklin, and Jackson.
You would only need three players on the bench: Taylor, Scales, and the Cookie Man.

Your starting 5 is the consensus, I would have Simmons because of his versatility. Hell, my second team would be,

Derrick Taylor-He was a true combo guard. Can play the point and shooting guard also.

Howard Carter-Shooting Guard. Pure shooter here.

Jerry "Iceman" Reynolds-Versatile player that can play 3 different positions. Point, Small Forward, Some Shooting Guard in a pinch. All this at 6'7. For those that don't remember Reynolds, look up his stats against Jordan when LSU played North Carolina. He was a total BEAST.

John Williams-One of the most talented and gifted players to put on the uniform at LSU. He also can play Point, Shooting Guard, Small Forward and even Power Forward at 6'8.

Dewayne Scales-At 6'9, when he was locked in, he was as talented as anyone. I would play him at the 5. Every player on the court can play multiple positions creating mismatches.

Torris and Roland were part of a sweet 16 squad. The other 3 were non existent.

Of what exactly? Lol

Three SEC titles and a tournament title in 7 years
Standing toe to toe with mighty Kentucky as they battled for SEC supremacy in 2 and sometimes 3 epic games every year
2 Final Fours and 2 Regional title games
Nationally ranked teams
Sold out Assembly Center with one of the most electric atmospheres in college basketball
Students camping out to get in, many of them standing room only ringing the walkways

Rudy was the linchpin which set it all in motion. If not for his injured finger against Wichita State in the 1981 regional final the Tigers may have won it all. It was a special time for a program that had not had much success in 25 years except for the 3 years of the magic of the Pistol.

For three straight years they were eliminated by the eventual champions with Magic Johnson and Michigan State and by Rudy's best friend and high school rival Darrel Griffith and Louisville in regional finals.

I saw this article last year, hard for me to not agree with it.

LINK

Now who would be on the bench and who would be the first one off, now that is completely open to debate.

good article there you linked and agree with 4 out of 5 but if team really were to play a game would take Ethan E Martin over CJ for reasons I listed in my first post.

As for who is first off the bench there should be no debate!

Willie Sims

Who dat thats the Supersub
Flies like a Piper Cub
Off the bench in the Game
Willie Sims claim to fame!

amen to this. I was in high school in early 80s and my dad and I had season tickets.

1978-81 SU basketball were some of the most exciting years I've ever experienced in sports. The Assembly Center was absolutely out of control - to this day that place was the loudest environment I've ever experienced.

And the regional finals in the Superdome in '81 was beyond belief.

The 3 point line would disappear when Pete shoots, obviously

Or you have Simmons drive to the basket and have 2 spot shooters open or a lob to shaq

Any all time LSU lineup without Chris Jackson is immediately invalid.

Totally disagree. Remember, he is not looking for the five best guys; he's looking for the five that would make the best team. And CJ, while definitely one of LSU's top four, was not an ideal point guard.

I’m going with Petit or John Williams or Jerry Reynolds since he could play D and is long.
