Basketball Team All Time Line-up

Spin-off of the Rushmore Thread
THIS IS NOT ABOUT STARTING 5. IT IS ABOUT MATCH-UPs against the likes of ALL TIME UK, Duke, NC, and UCLA teams so you better have diversity.
BTW - My Mount Rushmore were Shaq, Petit, Pete and CJ. You’ll notice petit, an NBA HoF small forward who I saw play, is not in my starting 5. This is about all aspects of basketball including how to defend. Hell, I’m gonna be hurting with Pete at the 2 going against Jordan and NC.
Clearly CJ is on my team see my bench. I have to have more than one point guard and I chose the ALL TIME ASSIST LEADER AT LSU who played in the NBA dish plus score.
If you’re the head coach and you have to pick a starting 5 to go into a tournament, take your best shot. Here are my 13 that would offer a great combination of grit and leadership among other skills. This was hard to do. I thought about match-ups with other teams and what you want to consider when having to face teams with great shooting guards hence I have Garret Temple because he is an all time great defender. I also had to include Kenny Higgs. You younger guys might not remember him, but he was an excellent distributor of the basketball, scorer and could defend.
Starting 5 using a little Old School...
Kenny Higgs point
Pete at 2
Simmons at 3 (some might question this, but he would be a baby with these others and Wade coaching them. He would be humble pie).
Tyrus Thomas at 4
Shaq at 5
On my Bench
CJ
Bob Petit
John Williams
Jerry Reynolds
Stromile Swift
Rudy Macklin
Garett Temple
Don Redden
I really wanted to have all of these in my 13, but couldn’t get them in:
Jordan Mickey
Derrick Taylor
Brandon Bass
Baby Davis
Stanley Roberts
Cam Thomas
Darrel The Silent Assassin Mitchell
Jose Vargas
Nikita Wilson
Ricky Blanton
Dwane Astronaut Scales
Greg Cookie Man Cook
Jarell Martin
Ethan Martin
Marcus Thornton
Joe Dean
Howard Hi-C Carter
Leonard Swat Mitchell

There you go.

Any all time LSU lineup without Chris Jackson is immediately invalid.

Pistol, CJ, Shaq, Petit, Macklin
It gets a bit murky from there but this is a pretty clear cut 5 IMO.

I need a guard that can distribute the ball and not worry about shooting. I got Pete, Shaq and Simmons for scoring, Thomas for protecting the rim. CJ is on the team and would play a lot. That’s why there are 13 on my team INCLUDING CJ.

You’re coaching the team. Pick 13 like I did because you have to play UK with Logo, Duke, UCLA all time teams. It is about March-ups in March. This is not about the best players but the best combination on the floor to get you wins.

Are you under the impression that Maravich wasn’t a great distributor because he scored? He did what he did and still averaged 5 assts/gm. I think having CJ in the starting lineup on side him would be just fine?

Durand “ Rudy” Macklin was the rock upon which the fantastiic climb to the top was built. No LSU all time starting team should exist without him.

CJ is on the team.
I have no idea why I tried to ask tRant to ever think from a coaching perspective to match up with all time great schools.

Well, he is on the team and would play a lot. This is my team and I chose distribution and defense at 2 positions otherwise Petit would be starting instead of Tyrus Thomas. Look at my bench and part of my 13.

Idk why you can’t see that Maravich penetrating and giving the defense a choice of leaving Shaq or CJ to help could possibly be the most devastating thing in basketball history. Just think about that for 1 second. Pete freaking Maravich driving to the hole with his choice of a lob to SHAQUILLE O’NEAL or kick it out to CHRIS JACKSON for 3. Talk about pick your poison. That team is great...but with those 3 on the floor together, it’s ridiculous

Shaq
Macklin
Simmons
Pistol
CJ
This team can score, assist, rebound. If you need defenders, add Temple, Swift, Thomas, Scales. Anyone else is gravy.

Of 2 final four runs. Some elite 8’s, several sweet 16’s and an-at the time-record 10 straight tournament appearances. We were a really good hoops program in the 80’s you know.
