More #SEC ABS Details:

- 3 ABS challenges (if you win the challenge, you retain)
- You get a bonus challenge in extra innings if you don't have any left
- ??ONLY a pitcher, catcher, hitter can request ABS challenge (within 2-3 seconds). Untimely challenges will NOT be granted.

I'm going to bet that there are some particular SEC umpires that will not be assigned HP during the tournament.

About to be some very angry umpires in Hoover.

Jeff Head might spontaneously combust.

There’s going to be a lot of fans in the game thread that realize they actually don’t know what’s a ball and strike on TV.

Kind of surprised. I didn't expect them to implement something like this because it has the potential to make the umpires look really bad. I guess it has the potential to make us fans look dumb too with all the complaining we like to do about college umpires.

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of ABS being used in the college game. I know some conferences and schools probably can't make it happen, but there's no reason the SEC and ACC shouldn't have it, at a minimum.

True, but I know a ball at the ankle or in the opposite batter's box is not a strike.

Especially since they started making the teams turn off the "strike zone box" during conference games. Even the broadcast crew could not see it.

What's the rulebook definition of the strike zone?

Sure, but game threads are filled with a bunch of dudes drinking whiskey on their couch whining about every other pitch without ever caring to rewind and see where the pitch actually was.

This is likely to result in more walks if the Major League rulebook definition of the strike zone is enforced. My sense is that the college strike zone is usually called a bit more generously than the MLB zone, in part because college pitchers just generally don't have the consistent control that MLB guys do.

Of course, they're fans. NCAA umps are inconsistent with balls and strikes, that's my biggest gripe. It does not always hurt LSU, either. I don't mind a narrow or a wide strike zone; I just want consistency across innings and across teams.

Yea that would be nice to have again.

It's long past due that college umps are held accountable in some kind of way when they're behind home plate. If this becomes more widespread I suppose it can help do that.

Rulebook definition of a strike (the bold part defines the strike zone):

NCAA 7-4 A Strike
A Strike

SECTION 4. A strike is:

a. A legal pitch struck at by the batter without the ball touching the bat;

b. A legal pitch that enters the strike zone (see definition and diagram in Rule 2) in flight and is not struck at; Note 1: The plate umpire should determine if the pitch is a strike in relationship to the batter’s normal position as the pitch crosses home plate. Any part of the ball passing over any part of the plate, from the bottom of the kneecaps to the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, is a strike. The pitch should be judged to be a strike or a ball as it crosses home plate, not where it is caught by the catcher. Note 2: If a pitched ball strikes the ground in front of the batter and the batter swings at it, the ball is in play if hit and a strike if missed.

c. A legal pitch that becomes a foul not caught on the fly when the batter has fewer than two strikes;

d. An attempt to bunt that results in a foul not legally caught;

e. A legal pitch that is in the strike zone and that touches the batter, regardless of whether he swings or not (the ball is immediately dead, the pitch is a strike, no runners may advance, and the batter is not awarded first base);

f. A foul tip;

g. Awarded after the batter fails to take a position in the batter’s box immediately after ordered by the umpire (see 7-1-c and 7-1-e); and

h. Awarded if the batter deliberately steps back in the box or swings in such a manner to attempt to create catcher’s interference. If the swing hits the catcher or the mitt, the batter shall be called out. All base runners shall return to the base occupied at the time of the pitch.

i. Awarded if the batter is judged to intentionally make a movement to be hit by a pitch, regardless of where the pitch is located; or allows himself to be intentionally hit by a pitch that is not thrown within the boundaries of the batter’s box unless it was not possible to avoid being hit.
