think the people that complain about this project are looking at it from solely an LSU athletics perspective. The arena is a small part of a much larger development project that will include restaurants, hotels, academic and research facilities, shops, offices, and other things. This development isn't just meant to replace the PMAC, it is essentially meant to replace downtown BR as the entertainment center of Baton Rouge Thats why getting EBR on board was so important.

So basically a Perkins Rowe

Yuck. I do agree that area needs revitalization but it will be something very stale and probably won’t even chase the riff raff out.

Just renovate the PMAC

There is no use putting anymore money into upgrading that building. It's obsolete. They could still use it for volleyball and gymnastics if they want to, but basketball requires more modern amenities that drive income such as suites amd club level seating. It doesn't have to be alot of it, but you have to have some and the PMAC just doesn't allow that.

Raze the PMAC, move gymnastics and volleyball to the Cow Palace.

Maybe I'm missing something but what's so bad about Perkins Rowe? Going grab dinner and a movie there makes for a great night imo. Also, last I checked, Perkins Rowe doesn't have a 15,000 person entertainment venue. So no, not like perkins rowe

Put gymnastics in whichever venue has the higher capacity. It was damn near full this past Friday night. Highest opening night attendance ever, they just keep packing them in the seats.

It's still BR, so there is only so much you can do about the "riff raff". But right now that area is just a dilapidated golf course adjacent to some of the few college bars on campus fronting a literal slum. Even a "Perkins Rowe" would be an upgrade

This board never ceases to amaze me. We have a developer who is willing to come in an put up the funds to develop a new arena and entertainment district and lease it to LSU. That same developer is a partner with Ticketmaster and thus can just about gurantee entertainment bookings for the said arena. That same developer has also already developed a similar arena for another SEC school (UT) and just announced a partnership with another (Vandy). And yet in one thread we have:

- Complaints that LSU and the state should just spend $75+ million redoing the PMAC (which still wouldnt be able to accomodate conerts)
- People suggesting we redo the cow palace and play there (which hasn't been used for anything outside of livestock shows since probably the 80s and would cost into the hundred millions to just get it up to code to host any event)
- People complaining that the new district will be "just another Perkins Rowe" as if a dilapidated golf course is better
- People essentially complaining that its still Baton Rouge and thus will have riff raff (LSU isn't picking up and moving to St. George or Ascension Parish anytime soon)
- Arguments that BR still wouldn't get concerts (which I believe to be false) and that its a waste of money (but again, its not LSU or the state's money)

People bitch about literally anything under the sun

Then tear down the PMAC and build a new one in the same location.

LSU doesn't have $400 million to do so.

Texas did it with the Erwin Center.

They did not. Moody Center was built a block away from Erwin.

Basketball can play in the Cow Palace again for a few seasons.

The URec Courts would be more suitable than the Ag Coliseum.

As far as I know, the arena last went out for bid back in August, and they were design development documents.

I would guess updated, more complete drawings will be released soon - if they are still going forward with the project.

I don’t think people realize that the spot where they are talking about building the new arena is a half mile from Fred’s/Tigerland. The LSU golf course is a pretty huge chunk of land. The PMAC/Bernie Moore/Field House/natatorium are actually closer to the ghetto north of campus.

And let’s face it, you’re going to be within a mile of a ghetto pretty much anywhere with the Baton Rouge city limits.

I believe future phases do end up developing the rest of the golf course which ends up butting right up against the Freds property, but all new development like this is going to do is encourage private developers to come in and buy up the shitty apartments in Tigerland and redevelop into something better. Right now there is absolutely no incentive to do so and so slumlords have taken over the area

I agree. Which I think is ridiculous because it comes down to a frivalous lawsuit claiming that voters within LSU's campus did not get to vote on the tax. I have yet to wrap my head around why individuals are able to register to vote with LSU as their permanent residence. If people want to bitch about something with this project, bitch about the fact that this litigious state is filled with grifters who jump on any opportunity to get a payday and their name in a news headline at the cost of holding up projects that can actually better the community. Looking at you Darrel Glasper Sr

So if you are going invest in a new arena, make it an investment beyond just basketball. BR is a decent sized (mid) market. Use the new arena and development to try to improve the city as a whole

They can’t seem to come to mutual agreement on building a b-ball arena for just a WBB team though championship quality still loses money. If we can somehow convince the new administration that we do indeed have a MBB team that still makes money though only gets paid by the wins therefore it’s hard to notice. Reason being we’ve made over a +1mill but still in the red because we owe McCantWin & Staff 4mill a year. So we’re at a stalemate
