They need to build a new PMAC on track and field facilities. It will be next to all practice facilities. Make it well enough to attract top concerts that generate new revenue.

This is not an LSU facilities project. This is an Oak View Group project. It is privately funded and built and run by Oak View Group, and will be leased to LSU for athletics use. Read up on the Moody Center in Austin. It's a first class venue and that is the model they are using for the LSU project.

Still doesn’t mean it will be anywhere near the same facilities like Moody. Austin/UT will have their new women’s arena built before LSU arena breaks ground.

The Oak View Group is literally the developer who did the Moody Center.
I will also say that most of what is being done right now (establishing an EDD and tax structure, zoning, etc) is being done so that once a formal deal is in place with Oak View Group, construction can move quickly. A formal deal with Oak View Group and UT was announced in 2018, construction began at hte end of 2019, and the arena was opened in mid-2022. I know its fun to shite on louisiana and LSU when it comes to development, but even the moody center took 4 years and that was with a consistent athletic director and university president. LSU has had significant turnover and OVG is also getting over their own turnover and legal battles before an official deal was even in place. Using the moody center timeline, I would guess that it'll be constructed around 2031

It’s just a bad idea to have some independent monstrosity to play home games in.

This. Make Tigerland a massive parking lot or garage for all venues

I've never been in the PMAC and thought "OMG this sucks." It's fricking fine.
I do every time my armrest falls off. Every time I see misaligned lower level stands that people trip on. Every time I see extension cords stretched out in main walkaways because outlets under the goal don’t work. Every time I walk in a bathroom that only holds 4 people. Every time I look around and see no club seating or suites. Every time I look at it from outside and see peeling/faded paint. Every time I see water stained ceiling tiles. I could go on if we need to.
A new arena will also draw major concerts to Baton Rouge just as the PMAC did in the 70s and 80s.
They did years of studies and determined renovating it isn’t worth it. They have big investors lined up. They just need to get on with it.

Talk about it for 10 years then take 5 more years to build it. We’re in year 2 of talking about it. It’s the Louisiana way.

What independent monstrosity would LSU be playing in? The arena would still be on campus. It would have some luxury suites. In theory would be an attractive venue for events outside of men's basketball. Hell, BR potentially could even bid for being a NCAA Tournament site considering places like Spokane, Des Moines, Birmingham are future sites for 1st round games.
Renovating the PMAC just seems likely throwing good money after bad.

It's on the same agenda as the new bridge and loop south of Baton Rouge!

Need the golf course turned into an entertainment district around the basketball arena.
There is so much potential in that area. Tigerland needs to be bulldozed and get some investors in and connect to campus in a more functional way. The whole area between Nicholson and levee is wasted. I noticed driving down Nicholson from campus to downtown has vastly improved. Several of the business are getting new store fronts, there is a new convenience store/gas station with strip mall about to open. Mark Emmert used to call that a potential gold mine for the campus and the city. The side streets are still a problem, but the new pavement, street improvements, store front refurbishing has at least put some lipstick on the pig.

Btw the company’s CEO was indicted
Why is renovating the PMAC throwing good money after bad?

It's unlikely to attract any events outside of LSU sports and the attractiveness of LSU is sports is based on the success of the program....not the opulence of the arena. Sure, everyone loves a nice arena. But it's not going to stop LSU fans from coming if the program is really good. Conversely, its not going to attract fans (once the novelty wears off) if the program is bad.

Sure. But that doesn't mean the idea, in principle, was bad. If executed correctly LSU and BR gets (1) an arena that attracts multiple events...not just LSU sports (2) potential increased revenues from development of real estate that is (very likely) a current loss [i.e. the golf course]; (3) maybe some revitalization of an "entertainment district" (Tigerland) that could make the school more attractive to students. Right now the area's primary student entertainment district is 2-3 bars adjacent to a literal slum.
You don't really get any of that added benefit by a major renovation of the PMAC. If, for nothing else, there's no room to grow the surrounding area. I want LSU basketball to be as great as anyone, but simply just dressing up the PMAC isn't going to have much effect on that. If you are going to invest, make a wholistic investment that could reap benefits beyond just the basketball program.

I’m only worried about LSU basketball. If you want to increase our home court advantage building a big event center is not the way to go about that.

Leave the golf course. Put the arena on top of the slums that were formerly student apartments.

when in reality you can do a complete makeover for the PMAC for $50-70mil easily.
But that wouldn’t be good enough
We’re going to have the same problem with the Superdome and SKC too soon… only so much renovation you can do

To be fair, LSU has already said that the arena would have adjustable seat capacity with panels to cover the upper deck which would direct noise to the court and create more intimate settings for basketball. The layout would also hopefully allow for fans, particularly the students, to be closer to the court since it wouldn't be the awful circular shape
