He's the guy who told then Chancellor Mark Emmert he didn't want to hire Nick Saban because Saban's salary requirement was too high and fans might complain about paying a football coach that much.
How much was Saban asking for to leave Michigan State and come to LSU, you ask?

The only three sports that matter have been in decline the past 5 years. Alleva rode the momentum of the golden years and work done in the early and mid 2000’s for his first couple of years, but the last 5 years have been mediocre at best for LSU’s standards.
We’ve had one elite team in the three major sports, the 2017 baseball team. We haven’t come close to winning the SEC in football. Our basketball program finally turned the corner, thanks to a Nunes pushed hire after Alleva hired fricking Johnson and Jones back to back, only for the administration to put that sport in jeopardy with their handling of this situation.
Do we want to strive for excellence? Or do we want to be only good enough to maximize revenue? Alleva’s tenure clearly focused on the latter

All those were major issues that made LSU athletics look like a rudderless ship. That is inexcusable for a top tier athletic department. On top of that the alienating of the fan base, and killing the game day experience.
