Most of these reasons are due to Airbnb, not the hosts. What you don't understand, is that you as a guest should be trading leaving the place "clean" for a larger/ cheaper place to stay.

Why do you think you can leave a place abused and a disaster, and have it for cheap? Honestly asking, I'm curious?

I agree some people go way too far. Again, I don't require anything. But stripping the beds, starting the dishes, and taking out the trash isn't hard.

Its not about saving the housekeepers time, its about holding the guests responsible for not being pigs and destroying a place.

Do people seriously leave massive amounts of dirty dishes in the sink of AirBnB’s?

I get leaving a cup next to the sink or some tissue in the bathroom trash can, but is it seriously an issue with people leaving full trash cans and completely filthy kitchens?

of course they do. entitled morons who treat it like a motel.

yeah we used one for hunting last year instead of staying in tents and it was awesome, doing it again this year. $35/night per person. Really nice place, too.

what other options are there though? there's blame on both sides. owners consistently increasing requirements, expectations, and rules for their renters (while simultaneously also increasing prices) + renters taken from a cross section of our fricked up low-class, low-trust American culture in 2026.

You know there's reviews right? Airbnb is forcing people to list requirements now in the listing.

If you want to force people to do dishes and take trash out and keep a gate closed, why is that wrong? List it and get reviewed on it. If you don't like it as a guest, don't stay there or leave a review.

Asking AIrbnb to get involved is counter intuitive.

Literally 0% of hosts want a guest that leaves dirty dishes to be done. That's not a viable solution.

Christ on a cracker people are fricking trashy. Every AirBnB or rental cabin or whatever, that I’ve stayed in I always make sure I do the dishes, take out trash, and if I remember strip the bed.

It takes less than 20 minutes and is just common courtesy before leaving. Then again, we (wife and I) do this at camps and vacation homes anyway so it just feels natural.

Or for people who hate hotels.

I don't think anyone thinks that. However, you can't keep charging higher and higher cleaning fee's while also requiring the guests to do all the things the cleaning fee is supposed to cover.

Things have gotten where they are because we have a lowest common denominator of guests that abuse houses and we have a number of owners that are abusing cleaning fee policies and requirements.

I’m sure there are some super ultra mega Karen’s that this is good to stop.

White women whose husbands have money can be such a massive pain in the arse to deal with.

There still will be a maid/cleaning service

Have you seen how trashy some people are?

People who keep a clean home don’t have an issue with reasonable housekeeping rules because for most it’s habit. I’m not cleaning the rental for them but i don’t mind taking my own trash out and putting dishes in dishwasher because I do that at home by habit and it’s no hassle for me

I don't have to do that in a hotel, which is the point. I'd rather just stay in a hotel in most circumstances, unless Airbnb is the only real option, because Airbnb in most cities is not cheaper anymore

I get not leaving the place a total disaster as the lowest common denominator does, and I don't ever do that because I am a nice person. I would do most of the things they want me to do anyway.

But I also shouldn't HAVE to do things covered by a cleaning fee. That is what maids are for.

Maybe so, but explaining it how you did makes a great point of why it’s dying..

If it’s laid out the way you put, it’s too expensive to make sense 90% of the time.

It should probably only be really full of 3 BR + homes, and beach condos

Add on top of that I don’t find these places 100% clean. At least at a hotel I am getting standardized bedding. Here I could be getting a quilt that Big Balls Maloney laid on buck naked and didn’t get washed at the air bnb.

maybe i'm not understanding. you are saying that you shouldnt have to list requirements on the listing? i am not clear on why that is so devastating to you.

The issue I run into with Air BnB is the host sometimes leave things in a state of repair or needing repair. I never feel like evaluating the whole house first problems so I don’t get billed for something broken later.

Yeah, you have to walk the place like you're renting a car.

Yeah, pretty sure that is what I said.

Cheaper and they had you do the stuff a maid would do.

No, I'm telling you that you're wrong. The "short and utterly reasonable" list was generally how to turn the key back over (if there was a physical key), remove anything perishable from the fridge, throw the trash, and make sure the door was locked behind you. That's pretty much it. I never had to wash bedding or towels, clean floors, etc, which is what you would expect a maid to do.

Is that not a maids job in a hotel?

The list has no doubt become larger, but 10-12 years ago when staying in an AirBnB it was "run the dishwasher, take out trash, maybe strip the beds"

All of those I would consider maid jobs if I was in a hotel.

You haven't seen their revenue I guess. I can't find a linkable chart with 2026 numbers. But they are up every year YOY since 2021.

quote:

Airbnb had revenue of $3.61B in the quarter ending June 30, 2026, with 16.54% growth. This brings the company's total for the last twelve months to $13.16B, up 13.64% year-over-year.

I have a short-term rental and I agree with your sentiment, except for this:

Many Airbnbs are not cheaper places to stay, and customers are already paying a substantial cleaning fee. 90% of our guest leave the place super clean and we don't require them to strip bedding or load the dishwasher. We do request that they throw out trash if there is food waste. Only a handful have left the place a mess, those few guest we've noted that in their review.
