Airbnb finally trying to get owners to stop treating guests like maids

Fighting back against the meme:
Obviously, hosts will likely just up cleaning fees, but all of this bullshite made getting an Airbnb in many circumstances not worth it

Airbnb is only worth it if you have a big group or you’re staying in a small town and your hotel options are shite

Yeah, very much the case. Also places like the Florida Panhandle/Gulf Coast/Beach it can be worth it.
Otherwise I'd rather just be in a hotel with a concierge and staff and daily turndown etc

Thought this was the whole point of AirBnB when it started. You knew you'd get a shittier experience but you didn't care because it was cheaper.

We used to get them if traveling with our dog so we didn't have to worry about barking complaints, or so we would have a fenced yard to let out to.
The last few we looked wouldn't let you leave them alone even if kenneled. Yet they were deemed pet friendly.

Problem is, AirBnB is no longer cheaper than a mid-grade Hampton Inn, which provides a lot more- security, fitness room, front desk, amenities shop, etc.
As someone else said, AirBnB only makes sense for the 4-6 room, multi-family or large family getaways where you'd likely be taking up several hotel rooms a night.

AirBnB is worth it if you need a full kitchen and/or washer and dryer.
If not for those things, there is nothing better about an AirBnB

Nah, AirBnB started out amazing. Not only was it cheaper, but the to do list was short and utterly reasonable. Then you had a bunch of absentee landlords who thought this would be their hassle free retirement plan, and it went to shite.

The issue I run into with Air BnB is the host sometimes leave things in a state of repair or needing repair. I never feel like evaluating the whole house first problems so I don’t get billed for something broken later.

Airbnb has gotten too expensive with the fees. I only use it outside the country now.
It's great in Mexico getting a $45 apartment for the weekend.

When I started seeing cameras, that was the end for me. No more.

Yeah, pretty sure that is what I said.
Cheaper and they had you do the stuff a maid would do.

I like Airbnb but it’s important to check the reviews of a listing before booking.
I’ve never minded the basic stuff like put all linens in a pile and take out the trash and reset the thermostat. But yea I’m not into doing the laundry and washing dishes. I’ll put the dishes in the dishwasher at most

Absolutely never saw it this way at the beginning.
It was better. It was cheaper, you got way more space for less money, didn't have to deal with a hotel, washer/dryer, kitchen, and people got an easy portal to make extra money renting things out
Things went downhill quickly

As someone that owns a rental, IDK the answer here. But its laughable if you think letting Airbnb control this is for the better. Outside of a good platform to book, Airbnb is absolutely fricking terrible. That's on both sides, as I've had terrible customer service as a guest also.
All this will do is force people to increase cleaning fees for the average person.
I've had people leave an entire fridge worth of dishes of leftovers in the fridge as well as full sink of dishes. You know how long it takes to do that many dishes?
Your average housekeeper whether its a residential house, airbnb, etc is making $40-50/ hour. A 2 bedroom takes about 1.5 to 2 hours for a normal clean and another 60 mins for laundry.
Hotels are paying basically min wage plus maybe 20% with on site staff, so depending on the area $12-20/ hour.
My entire point here is that the average user just is ignorant.

Yep, owners have to work on the margins of running a hotel. Which seem to be pretty slim.
Or they provide a worse experience.

I've been using doing chores as a way to get a later check out.

Do people seriously leave massive amounts of dirty dishes in the sink of AirBnB’s?
I get leaving a cup next to the sink or some tissue in the bathroom trash can, but is it seriously an issue with people leaving full trash cans and completely filthy kitchens?

what other options are there though? there's blame on both sides. owners consistently increasing requirements, expectations, and rules for their renters (while simultaneously also increasing prices) + renters taken from a cross section of our fricked up low-class, low-trust American culture in 2026.
the only way to keep this going as a business model is to have Airbnb institute stronger central controls.
as with most problems we face these days, "it's the culture, man"
