My second year at the Ol’ War Skule.
Never even thought about going to a BB game.
Made plenty of games at the Assembly Center as Daddy Dale was beginning to take big steps forward with that program.

“Tomato’s ” Lamabe was the way he was introduced to me by someone working in the equipment department. Really nice man

Jack Lamabe was a pretty good coach, but certainly Bergman was a huge improvement.
I still remember him as a big league pitcher and probably still have his baseball card.

I tried out when Lamabe was coach and Smoke was a grad assistant. I had run track at McNeese for a couple of years, then transferred to LSU. I was rooming with two guys from St. louis who had come to LSU on baseball schollys and they talked me into trying out. I made it thru two cuts before being the final cut off the team. I hadn’t played ball in two years but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Nothing like it is today foe sure!

I remember this well as I used to sit with the baseball guys in Pentagon cafeteria. Soderberg had some real talent but was not the same after that incident. That poor girl almost died of her injuries.

Soderberg transferred to after one year at LSU because he was academically ineligible. He had some potential but wasn't all that great before the Indian mounds incident. He was the original Nuke Laloosh.

What you just described and very well I might add, of the Jack Lamabe times....about 95 percent of college baseball programs in terms of fan interest are still at that stage.

Lots of those universities either have pro teams or minor league teams that draw in their audience.

I've got friends who would go study during games if it was nice out because you could spread out and it was reasonably quiet. No shite.

Tigerdropping is great for getting the older people in here telling some great stories. I just made 50 years old this year and didn't get to see some of the past LSU greats but hearing some stories of people that were around LSU at these times is awesome. My contribution Skip Bertman came to my little town in Louisiana and brought some players and held a clinic out on our little baseball field. I guess it was around 1983 or 1984 and I never forgot it.
