When he was hired by Paul Dietzel for the 1979 season he became LSU's first "full time" Head Baseball coach, meaning his repsonsibilities were 100% baseball. It was normal up until the mid to late 1970's for baseball coaches to have some duties with the football program, usually recruiting coordinator.

Pretty solid guy. He was a college grad, Marine and played in the majors winning a World Series ring with St Louis in 1967. LSU and SEC baseball in general was light years away even from the 90's,let alone now. The "tournament" consisted of the top two teams in each division meeting at the team with the best conference's marks' home field. He took LSU to the tourney in year one 1979.

In the late 1960's and early 1970's Auburn was in the SEC "East" for baseball so with a 6/4 split every weekend teams could have conference games. That changed in the late 1970's and went to 5/5. With Ole Miss vs State and then Alabama vs Auburn closing out their '83 seasons against one another (there was no inter-divisional play) LSU ended its season at home against Florida State and 4th year coach Mike Martin. The Seminoles won both games 8-2 and then a crushing 6-3 win.

LSU pitcher Cal Santarelli, one of LSU's most underrated, and certainly UNKNOWN baseball players was 9-1 going into that game with a 2.33 ERA. Florida State game to bat in the top of the 9th down 3-2 with only two hits. But a lead off hit and two errors loaded the bases. Next batter hit a grand slam as Florida State went up 6-3 and then LSU went three up three down. LSU's season ended at 28-21 before 631 fans.

His tenure ended shortly thereafter and Lamabe maintained after asking for extensions over the last couple of years he saw his position listed in the classifieds of the Morning Advocate and State-Times. (it was listed as a formality as it is a 'state' job.)

Then came Skip and LSU became the sports' standard bearer. Amazing the metamorphosis LSU baseball has had!

Unfortunately, I was only on campus during the Lamabe years. The bright side was walking into the stadium for free and sitting anywhere. The down side was the team was not the best. Was told, by one of my high school teammates, that Lamabe would not recruit Louisiana kids. Not sure if that was true or not.

Danny Karp was the catcher those years and now lives right down the road from me here in Central Florida.

Ironically, his son pitched for FSU and against LSU in Omaha 2017.

I was there for his last 3 and Skip's first. Before Skip it was not unsual to go to a game at the Box vs a state team like SE La or Nicholls and the crowd would split if not even a tad more for the other guys.

I was a student those years as well, and you're right about the crowds. Baseball was my favorite sport back then, so I went quite a bit.

I don't recall how many Louisiana guys were on Lamabe's teams, but I do remember a pretty good ballplayer from Lafayette named Mike Saab, and the pitcher Cal was a stud. '83 was also the year that Dave Magadan hit .525 for Alabama.

LSU Baseball Roster 1983

Not the complete roster but looks like 8 of the 14 listed were Louisiana kids. I graduated from Broadmoor High School with Mark Howie (RIP).

I went to his baseball camp and I went to high school with his daughter. We are still friends to this day.

I did a YouTube video with Lamont at Large and we visited his grave as well as several others....including Pistol Pete who is close to my Grandparents

Lamont at Large...LSU Edition

It wasn't. However, he certainly did use his connections from years of being involved with baseball to pull in out-of-state talent. Lamabe went to college at Vermont; his best pitcher ever graduated from high school in Vermont (Jon Soderberg, who ended up being the top overall draft choice in the MLB's 1981 January draft...Soderberg was also on the LSU Indian Mounds one night with his girlfriend when she was struck by a motorist who tried to vault it, and she was badly injured; he was injured too and couldn't start the SEC Tournament-clinching game later that day, nor could the back-up pitcher either who was himself struck by a drunk driver at the same exact time across town - Lamabe was forced to start a third guy who ended up losing, so LSU did not play in the 4-team tournament for the conference title.

People forget that Smoke Laval himself was a grad assistant with that team, his first tour of duty in Baton Rouge and a big part of LSU's 22-win improvement over the previous season. That 1979 team was one of LSU's best teams ever at the time.

He was the coach when I was in school. Skip got here right around the time I was graduating.

As a student I missed zero football games, only a handful of basketball games and I never set foot in the baseball stadium. Things have changed since then.

I liked Coach Lamabe. In high school I helped coach at his youth camp in the Summer. He always had a frige over flowing with beer in the locker room.

Then it looks like was I was misinformed. That is just what I was told by one of the players.

I think it was Brodhead who offered Skip the job and he turned it down because Jack LaMabe was still the active coach. Skip said it would be dishonorable, I think he and LaMabe maybe knew each other or were friends.

Brodhead advertised the job, Skip got wind that LaMabe was to be relived of duties, and the rest is history.

I might have missed some of the facts, certainly was not privy to anything other than what I've read.

I knew about LaMabe because I was a big Pirate fan as a kid and he pitched for them at one time

I attended LSU in the fall of 1979, so the following spring I would ride my bike out to the baseball field. I knew nothing about it at all. I could ride up to the stadium at game time, walk in on a student ID and sit directly behind home plate 10 -12 rows up. No one attended. I believe Skip was hired for the following season and the rest was history.
