You put Thomas as the starting point guard on this team with Bashir and potentially a burks or graves, he'd probably average 6+ assist a game
That’s not a stretch considering he averaged 6.5 last season lol.

Lmao I didn't even know it was that high. Yea point stands!

Thomas, Miller and Nwoko were the only dudes I would have even thought about bringing back.
Reece is a better player than the Michigan State kid they just got.
Again, my point wasn’t to compare these guys though. All I’m saying is if his model is not successful, it will be questioned why he let a few of the turnkey pieces walk.
Yes Jalen Reed may be a backup at Michigan, but his floor is safe. A 26yr old foreign guy with some warts isn’t exactly ideal either.

The problems with Reed and Thomas is they both would have required a good bit of money (especially Thomas) and both have had rough injury histories. You dont know what you'd necessarily get out of either next season and if you're going to allocate a large sum of money, might as well do it to someone who doesnt have a bad injury past.
Obviously I think he would have loved to have Thomas and Reed (Reece, Nwoko and Miller for that matter too...he definitely tried with Reece and Miller)....in the case of the first two there, injury history + price probably just didnt make sense. With the other 3 guys, other programs swooped in and just offered way more.
It's not like Wade just let everyone walk without trying to retain some of them

Not retaining any of them sure seems more calculated then it is random.
We don’t know if it will prove to be a misstep or not, yet. At the end of the day none remained, for whatever reasons.

Couple new names to watch, both from France:
Melvin Ajinca (drafted by Mavericks in 2024)
Maxime Sconard (wouldn't cost anything significant, just a flyer)

We can put the secret roster plan to bed. Wade wanted to bring some guys from NC State and wanted to retain some LSU players. For whatever reason, it didn't work out that way. Adding 4 or 5 players that way totally changes the roster building process.

Given that Wade stated he’s not paying 10+ guys, the MSU guy may not be getting much at all so it’s a misnomer to say we took him over either of them
So why don’t we wait to see the final roster before we start claiming downgrades from a historically shitty SEC team? Maybe idk

Ugo left Mich State because he wanted a starting position. Oregon basically offered him the same role as Mich St - a well paid backup. Wade either offered him a starting spot or more money. Either way, he is part of that group of 7-8 guys that Wade intends to focus his NIL on.

Do bad teams matter J? The Kansas state guy was on a 12-20 team
Don’t think it matters and not really making declarations here. You have to be able to identify talent in a vacuum and outside of the team situations these players fall into.
It’s not a stretch to say that at least 4 guys on last years team were talented enough to stick around and at least contribute.

depends on how much they wanted vs. other guys on our board

He got $2 million I can’t imagine anyone matched that.

"What I mean and it will sound harsh, even if Dedan Thomas and Max McKinnon were paid each $100 in cash and a couple of raising Canes gift cards in NIL to play here. It still would have been a hell no, how could anyone in the SEC choose those two and think a good result would come out of it."
Love your contributions to the board Coastrashtiger, but not following you on both DJ and Max. Are you saying they weren't SEC level players? Or just not a good fit together in CMM's "system" (such as it was)?

I mean Reece didnt enter the portal till later in the process and already had his mind made up where he was going at that point. It's clear he tried to retain a few; Reed and Thomas just didnt make much sense from an injury history standpoint. He tried with Miller and Reece and they both ended up wanting more $ than we were willing to give. You have to stick to what you believe they are worth, or what he maybe was even working with at that time. The payroll he is working with today might look a lot different than it was 5 weeks ago. IF he came in and thought he might only have $10M, and someone like Reece gets offered $2M from A&M when we were offering $1M, he might not have thought we could match or exceed that at that point for example. Same with Nwoko's early $3M offer from Xavier who swooped in very early to get him. He had a value on these players based on what he thought his payroll would be and make those decisions at that time which was very quick for a lot of them to hit the portal after he got hired. He also probably had to go back to boosters and see who/what they were willing to pay for.

That's all good but I trust Wade's eye for talent. If they didn't come to an agreement with the guys wanting to leave it must have been for a good reason. Whether it was money or guarantees, etc. I don't think he just kicked them to the curb without trying to work something out if he felt like they could contribute.

He wouldn't play. Just an end of bench guy but if it helps Madar to have another Israeli, why not?
