Luis and Niang are probably out. I think everyone else should be ok.

Anyone know when the NCAA will start making a ruling on internationals? I know we're not the only team waiting on rulings. Exhibitions start in 5 or 6 weeks.
Practice can start on the 21st, less than 2 weeks away.

I don’t know how you could possibly say Niang is out but infer that Dessert is good to go?

A couple of legal actions that don't necessarily directly relate to LSU but do show which way the wind is blowing.
The SEC and Sankey were dismissed from the 5-for-5 TRO issued in Dallas County, Texas. There was some thinking that the Luis legal team would try to get the SEC and Sankey added to his TRO. They may still attempt this move, but I would have to think the LSU appetite for wading into these waters again is slim to none. It's a safe bet at this point that Luis will never play at LSU.
Then, the NCAA picked up another motion to stay, this time in the Georgia case. Notably, this now makes Jamichael Stillwell (Texas Tech) and RJ Godfrey (Arizona) ineligible. It's likely that this will eventually happen in the California case, which would impact Dent and Clark.

I got blasted for saying this earlier, but there is a real chance that we have less than 7 eligible players. The strategy here was extremely risky. You should start with 7-8 player that are clearly eligible and roll the dice on filling out the rest of the roster.
ETA. And I'll admit I'm one of Wade's biggest supporters and I'm very excited he's leading our program, but it felt like we took some unnecessary risk here.

It's not up to the SEC. The NCAA has already deemed several internationals with resumes similar to Niang and Dessert ineligible
The NCAA and SEC have a big problem. They can’t keep the overseas guys ineligible unless they signed pro contracts with stateside pro teams in basketball. It’s in their own rules they just passed.
There’s nothing that makes international pros ineligible.

on the bright side. I was on campus Monday and drove past two Asian students walking to the UREC with a Basketball in hand. they were both in the 5'7" -5'8" range but I am sure they could help us out

They're taller than Spud Webb!

This isn't accurate. The NCAA issued new guidance for internationals and appears to be strictly enforcing the "actual and necessary expenses" clause. Santos, Naing, and Dessert all made above "actual and necessary expenses" last season.

I honestly don’t care if this backfires. Like he always does, Pear will get the last laugh and come out on top. I can live with an NIT year knowing we have our guy and the future is bright. Not to mention football and baseball are going to have huge seasons.
All that said I bet Pear has an NCAA team. Not the seed we were hoping for getting everyone we initially pencilled in but just getting in would be fun.

I hope you are right, but as of today, there is a real possibility that we end up with 5 players on the current roster eligible (Mo, Divine, Bashir, Nunez, and Ruzik).
If the NCAA enforces its new guidance on international players, Santos, Niang, Dessert are going to need litigation to be eligible.
Dent and Clark are going to need a favorable ruling at the end of this month in the California 5 for 5 case (when the tide seems to be turning against players in other 5 for 5 cases that have gotten to the preliminary injunction or appellate stage). I think at this point, the odds of RJ Luis ever putting on an LSU jersey is very low.

I assume the 7 you're predicting are Mo, Divine, Bashir, Nunez, Ruzik, Dent and Clark. Those seem like the most likely, but like you said, Dent and Clark need favorable rulings, so we could end up with just 5 of the currently committed becoming eligible by the beginning of the season. IF that happens, then we would have to use enrolled walkons to fill the roster. We would have to delve into the pool of uncommitted transfers, but I assume they wouldn't be able to join the team until they enroll, so they would miss the early season. The situation is crazy!

No, I’m predicting 5 players, not 7. To get any more than 5, we will need favorable court rulings.

Well, the guidance is supposed to relate to the rule. The rule blatantly neglects to include pros other than those stateside.
Conversely, the football rule states ALL pro teams. Presumably to cover NFL, Canadian, indoor, etc.

If their guidance is to have any effect that broad, they need to include international players in the rule. Right now there is a conflict

Good point, but it looks like the NCAA is applying the new "guidance" to international players seeking eligibility.

Eh its year one. I feel like of you are going to take a risk this would be the year. As long as we appear competitive this year that will help with recruiting going forward. Also this was the year to roll the dice on Luis and all these internationals as well because of the 5 for 5 and all of the court cases. I don't know how much of it they knew about when they started down this road but I do remember people talking about this being the year to test this even back when he was hired.

That's kind of my concern. If you remove Luis, Dent, Clark, Niang, Santos and Dessert, exactly how competitive are we. It is very possible that we don't get any of these players on the floor. In fact, my guess is we will need to be successful in litigation to get any of these players on teh floor.

Watch this rule change for International players only last a year because they still have a hard on for Wade and didn't like him building a team of mostly overseas guys.
