Interestingly enough, his agent also represents Aaron Nola, who is his highest profiled client.
He also represents 2 MLB'ers that were drafted from Community college; Riverside City College (Nacho Alvarez. Note: Matt Clark went here before LSU), and Orange Coast College (Eric Waggaman)
Most of his clients are from Cali. He has 1-2 from TX, and a few connected to Oklahoma, who has a solid JUCO circuit if i recall.

According to Jacob Rudner, Golden West would be the JUCO if he goes that route. Good program. We’ve looked at guys from there but never brought anyone in.

Yeah, I don’t expect him at lsu.
You can make a good argument to come to LSU and get developed into a higher draft pick while getting paid. But you never know. Some kids just aren’t interested in coming to college.

It’s a double edged sword for him. Juco is quite the risk but could be quite the reward. He’s gonna want starter innings and he’s not gonna get that at lsu I’m afraid

I’m still holding out hope that Jay can pull some magic and get him to campus.

Question on draft eligibility rules -
If Schmidt came to LSU for a year, then decided 3 years in college wasn’t for him, could he go to JUCO for year 2 and then mlb draft after that?
In other words is he locked into 3 years if he attends a D1 school or is it only 3 years if you’re at the D1 school?

My understanding is that he could leave after one year at JUCO if he transferred from a four year university.
If it's flipped and they go from JUCO (one year) to 4 year university, they'd have to wait 3 years in total to leave (ignoring DES guys obviously).
So if Schmidt came to LSU, didn't like it, and transferred to JUCO, he could leave after that JUCO season - whether he leaves before the 2027 at LSU or goes to a JUCO for 2028.
Project would be the person to confirm.

Why risk going juco? If he gets hurt, say elbow, doesn't he risk not getting drafted at all next yr? So he loses $1.8M from Cleveland or LSU NIL payday as well.
The only reason to go juco, imo, is because he hates school and/or hates the Cleveland organization. Or his family is rich and he can afford to bet on himself for a year. What else am I missing?

Yeah, guys passing up the chance to develop in college at the premier program, playing games that matter in front of fans who care, in favor of going to the lower minors and working their way up screams to me that they just hate going to school. I get it if you get a huge signing bonus, but considering he's not signing with Cleveland, I can only assume hating school would be the reason to go JUCO for a year. We've seen this before, and my assumption has always been the same as to why it happens.
And maybe he actually comes here. That would be great, but I know better than to get my hopes up. I just can't believe Cleveland didn't have a plan figured out before drafting him. Did they just think they could draft him and talk him down from his number later? That's a terrible strategy.

He’ll risk 3 years of potential arm injuries at lsu vs only 1 year in juco. Not saying i agree with the decision to go juco, but thats a risk of coming to lsu, especially for pitchers.

Yeah, I know that's a talking point for people. Injuries can happen at any time, so if he's that worried, why not just take the 1.7 million that Cleveland has left to offer? If you're going to bet on yourself, don't be scared of 1 year vs 3 years. Go with the best path of development.
And if anyone thinks that's a dumb take, I can just about guarantee you that Jay Johnson is giving the same pitch right now.

I believe so yes,

It wouldn’t be terrible if he went juco for a year, didn’t get his number next year, and then came to LSU for 2. Would save us a little NIL while he is developing at a juco

I really think the going to JUCO and staying committed to LSU route is best for both parties given his desires. If he comes here, we're going to pay, he's not gonna pitch as much as he wants, then he's going to transfer. If he goes JUCO, he either gets what he wants after year 1 and doesn't wind up pitching for another school or he comes here when he can compete for a rotation spot.

I understand what you're saying and I actually agree with some of it. However, he still has room for development and he would develop far more in LSU's building than JUCO. I think thats the game changer if he can see the value in developing as a pitcher at LSU similar to a Kade Anderson (understand he doesn't have the ability to leave after 2 years but still).

Jay would have to come up with a package similar to William Schmidt's and I think it's been covered that those deals are not coming from him out of high school anymore.
And I support that as long as the portal system remains intact.

I agree with this as well, but my guess is he is valuing getting his number in the draft above all else. Obviously none of us have talked to the kid and we have no idea what he’s thinking but he seems like a guy who just wants to be in pro ball and would already be there if the Indians didn’t drastically come off of his number.
Maybe his team thinks with just one more year of development he can start hitting the upper 90s and get closer to that 4-5 million in the 2027 draft

I would almost be my life on the idea that Jay has met with Billy Glasscock to learn more about NIL budget prioritization. I know college baseball and football are vastly different sports but I’d imagine some principles crossover. BG does not believe in spending money on freshmen who won’t significantly contribute
