Where did this news on roster size of 40-41 come from? I know Jay mentioned it in but was there a change? I thought it was going to 34.

The roster limit of 34 is still there, but there are exceptions. The concern at the time was that a lot of players would have lost their roster spot with the change. To fix this/help with the transition, if a player was on a team at the time rosters were cut down to 34, they could be labeled as a "Designated Student Athlete" (DSA). DSAs (for the rest of their eligibility) don't count toward the hard roster limit so they are essentially grandfathered in. This DSA tag follows them even if they transfer.

Presley Courville from Barbe hit the portal out of Texas.
We have any interest there? I know that we reached out when he decommitted from A&M. He’s got quite a few teammates at ULL although a few of those are also in the portal.

He also said Milam is moving to second base
To be fair, he probably believes us like everyone else that Milam will be at SS. Armstrong are hearing from his sources. Those sources were correct about Milam coming back to LSU.
Armstrong had some errors from latest video on some of his numbers. He mentioned 5 portal additions, but it is 6. He also mentioned that he should probably get about 13 new signees and saw as around 36. We probably could add another a couple of portal additions.
So let us talk about the real numbers. We are at 23 and will probably lose 5 to more to the draft. That puts as at 18, Jay mentioned at 17. I will keep it at 17 because there could be conversations already done. If we leave it at 17, add the 6 additional portals put us at 23. We have 25 in the 2026 class and Jay predicts we will lose between 8-6. So if we lose at 8, puts us at 17 plus 23 us at 40. Jay mentioned we will keep "40 or 41".
Even is we lose one player, because Jay mentioned 17, the numbers are already tight. Jay is still taking visits according the Tigerrag video. We could easily take another portal addition. That would put us at 41. If Jay only loses 7 from the 2026 class, now we are 42. if we only lose 6, we are at 43. What if one of those 5 mentioned from our current roster returns, Guidry, Sheerin, Garcia, Brown or Curiel. Now we will be at 44.
The situation is obviously still fluid. The more we add the better for the team, but some subtractions might still need to happen.

So Jay mentioned that 40-41 number but did he say we'd roll into the season with that size roster? I get the feeling that we'll go into fall with that number to continue to eval some guys and also have some help for the inter squads and then the 5-7 (however many we're over) that don't fit will get sent to JUCO

I'm pretty sure that will be the roster for the season.
Last year Jay wanted 42. LSU told them 40. Keep in mind we have a new AD. We lost Reddemann late in portal to put us at 39. Shahrdar didn't stay, so kept us at 38
I don't know how the conversations will happen, Injuries, JUCO, more portal subtractions or we don't do very good in the draft.

I don't think anyone knows the true answer or close guess to any of this because we don't have the info that Jay does as far as how many are considered DSA guys.
Last season I think they started with 39-40 and the spring roster ended up with 38. Hard for me to believe they will want to go more than the 38 when the goal is to be at 34 in the next year or 2.

In the interview where he put out the 41 number he also says he a notepad where he writes out next year's roster at least twice a day. So it's obviously very fluid at this point.

I was thinking about 1st base and it’s been mentioned that a rotation there would allow a handful of guys to get playing time, but before this season Jay has gone wire-to-wire that’s February to June with Morgan then Jones. Do you think that if Jay could have his way he’d want one guy to seize the position in ‘27?

It's more of a team by team basis. Tre also wasn't the everyday 1b in 23. He played a lot of OF to get guys like Beloso ABs
It would be the same situation as '23 for this team you have guy like Tre that can play 1B and OF (Not saying to the same level, but well enough) that his bat won't leave the lineup, but a few others that can fit at 1st and OF that you want to get ABs to see if they should be in the lineup full-time by the postseason
Jones stayed there because he had no position versatility but was good enough at 1B to not waste the DH spot on him
ETA Tre had 47 appearances at 1st and 41 in the LF in '23. That doesn't mean they played 88 games that year, but instead he'd move around throughout a game to either get a bigger bat a PH or bring in defense at the end of the game with the lead

I'm sure if Jay would have his way he would want 1 guy to seize each position. That means everyone is playing to a high level. Platooning is more when you don't have that but its obvious Jay isn't scared to have to do that either.
It is too early to tell with any of that though. Still have the draft, fall, and spring ball to go through to narrow it down. Jay is building this roster with a lot of players being very versatile. Fall will have plenty players getting time at multiple positions.

Any idea the cost of getting the top High School catcher on to the team vs portal guys? Every year since the portal became a real thing, the catchers available have felt insane. Last year's portal had:
Carson Tinney
Alex Sosa
Garrett Wright
Mark Quatrani
Mack Whitcomb and Tagger Tyson got injured but are good, plus others.
For 2025 we didn't even get a top portal C, but Luis Hernandez started over our big HS guy Arrambide and was invaluable. Obviously Arrambide and Serna are great, but is it worth the $ to risk a HS catcher when they are hard to evaluate and every year elite dudes are entering the portal?

I think we should bring in a HS catcher every year and a JUCO catcher every other year. Guys move positions, transfer out, just don’t pan out, get drafted, etc, so the numbers always work out. But you need depth at catcher regardless because even if they aren’t playing in the game, there are 20 pitchers that need work every day and need to throw to someone.
And you don’t want all that wear and tear on the starter or even just the top 2.
Portal fill in when necessary, but a HS every year and JC every other would keep you in good shape.

Moscona said that they are looking for two more pitchers and are visiting this weekend. La pitcher is a top on list top but competition. Then a Lefty.

Thomas Allen and Micah Worley seem to be the targets

This year’s catcher rotation is interesting, I’m wondering how Yamin might help provided he stays in the program. There’s been no buzz about him leaving and no buzz about us bringing in a portal catcher, but good gracious our receiving last year left much to be desired. I’d love a really good glove back there in the final innings of close games, and I don’t care if we develop one of our own into a defensive stalwart or we get one from JUCO, NAIA, D2, the Ivy League, New York City Public Schools, the Sunbelt, the SEC, or Nicaragua. Maybe defensive specialists at that position don’t want a limited role and are seeking out places where they play more than just spot duty? I don’t know the answer but in ‘27 something has to change for the better.

Both catchers improved by a pretty wide margin from start to end of this season. I understand it is frustrating but both guys are young and it is really hard to come from high school where the pitching isn't nearly as hard to catch as in college. Also, some of the pitchers didn't have a clue where the ball was going when it left their hand. That doesn't help out catcher. Hopefully pitcher development and a better pitching staff who can attack the strike zone will help the catchers do their job even better next season.

I wouldn’t mind if Jay brought a defensive catcher specialist to work with them during the fall. I do think their receiving skills could use some work but also some of our pitchers were so wild last year it couldn’t have been easy to catch.
