but has there been any word on Gasparino?
I don't know that LSU is making a play here, but LSU Baseball Recruiting and Jay Johnson do follow him on twitter. That usually means something. Still, that very likely could have been from his time in high school.

I’d imagine we have some guys in this weekend. Maybe he’s one of them. Fun to speculate since we have no actual media coverage of this stuff

I guess we can just agree to disagree on Reaves' defense. I watched every game plus the fall games plus some fall practices. I didn't see a bad defender. I saw an average defender. He made quite a bit of plays that a bad defender wouldn't have. I didn't see him as lost. I think he's pretty athletic. He was mostly in position. I saw no issues with his arm. Of course his glove isnt ++ like the 3 guys who played. Ultimately it's probably a moot point to even discuss. I'd be surprised if he starts here next season. I do think he will wind up excelling wherever he gets an opportunity to play. I don't remember anyone hitting the ball hard between the alleys and being caught at the wall more than him, even in limited at bats. I think his offensive numbers this season were deceivingly low. I would like to know what his average exit velo was and where it ranked on the team. I feel like he hit the ball hard in a greater percentage of at bats than pretty much anyone. I bet he was top 5 for sure.

That is what I don't understand and what is lacking
Out of all the media people that cover l s u, you would think one would do year round coverage with baseball....
Regular season
Recruiting
Fall ball
Portal
There is plenty of content

All relative to what the media has access to also. If Jay don't want the media to cover recruiting type stuff then they won't have access to it.
Most media coverage for football recruiting seems to come from the players on social medias putting out pics and videos of their visits. Doesn't seem like you see that all that much in baseball until someone is announcing their decision.

You do hear, in football recruiting, a lot of folks that just pick up the phone and call/text/DM a recruit (or someone connected to a recruit) to get info. That is what is missing in our reporting...working connections, digging for scoops, etc.

That’s not bad in a vacuum but SEC pitching would demolish him
I agree with you. Btw, do you have similar concerns about Brayden Simpson?

hard to say, I hate to just make reads off of their numbers alone. Strikeouts are a pretty easy tell though, so.
Generally...
moving up in conference, especially in the SEC, you are going to strikeout more as a hitter. If Calloway already K's that much vs Southland pitching, he is really going to struggle in the SEC.
That said, the Big South that Simpson plays in is a much lesser conference than the Southland is, which UNO is in. Simpson has incredible numbers and does not strikeout nearly as much. But the competition is worse.
I think he is closer to having a similar hit profile to Danny Dickison than a guy that is going to strikeout a ton like Calloway

Luis Hernandez struck out 50 times in 2024 at Indiana St.
Struck out 35 times here this season, even if you account for K rate it went a little bit down this year at LSU vs. last year at Indiana St. It's not always an easy thing to say one way or the other.
Now obviously what did go down a good bit was Luis' power and BA from last year to this year. I think thats going go to be expected almost any time from a mid-major to major conf jump up. There's some cases though where it does stay similar or even go up though.
In the end, its always tough to predict, but I would lean more towards a guy still being successful who hit near .400 even on the this level. Some guys just really blossom later in their career. We've seen this with so many of these mid-major to SEC transfers who werent necessarily notable guys until their 3rd or 4th seasons in college at their mid-major.

But also wasn't he a very part time catcher last year and then went to basically catching 90% of our games?

I have a childish and unimportant question - where are the Tiger emojis from Jay with the commitments? Reserving for big fish? Gotta say those hit like crack.

16% Ind St 2024
15% overall 2025
23% in SEC play
Again, it’s just a snap shot. And none of these are bad marks. A guy that mildly K’d at a lower level can show some regression and still be useful like Hernandez was.
When a guy that K’d 32% in the Southland shows regression, you have what?
You bring up Jared jones, keep in mind his K rate over the last two seasons is 21%. And you were talking like that was drastic.

Didn’t seem like there were many highly talented kids who hit the baseball portal this year compared to years past.

We had more time to look at them last year
