Annnndddddd here we go again....

Iowa State 11 players depart after Steve Prohm was fired
Notre Dame had 9 depart after Brey retired
Kansas State had 11 depart after a coaching change
Texas Tech had 8 depart after a coaching change
VCU had 10 players leave after Mike Rhodes took the Penn St. job
SMU had 10 players depart (9 transfers) after they fired their HC this past offseason
USC had 11 players depart after they fired their HC this past offseason
Ole Miss had 10 guys leave after Kermit Davis was fired.
St. Johns had 11 guys depart after Anderson was fired.

When a coaching change is made now, absent a situation where an assistant takes over, most of the players leave. It was a novel concept in 2022 because the freedom of transfer rules had really just started to be implemented. Now, as it turns out, that is the norm.

How did the "trouble" affect LSU?

Did McMahon start the season with less than 13 scholarship players? No, he had a full roster...by May of 2022

Was McMahon unable to recruit? Well, since this is the recruiting board he signed a top 20 class despite the "trouble"?

Did LSU have to forfeit games before the start of the 22-23 season? Spot the opponent 20 points to start every SEC game? Play with one arm tied behind their back?

No, they had a full roster. One that people who follow the sport for a living thought should be decent. Not championship level, of course. But NO ONE expected that. Yet, you and about 4 people think McMahon inherited a situation where LSU received the death penalty and he had no means of building a roster except HS signees and JUCO transfer. It wasn't an ideal situation. No one has ever argued otherwise. But it there was EVER a time to have to rebuild a roster immediately, this is it, because a new coach has literally more than a thousand college players available to him who will be immediately eligible. Hell, even the "sanctions" LSU did get were in reality nothing. They literally did not cost LSU any roster spots.

Despite all of the clouds, storms, death, and other adjectives surrounding the program, McMahon has done a good job recruiting. I've said that countless times. But that, as of yet, has not produced any marginally successful results. He still has a losing record in his LSU tenure. That doesn't mean this year can't be great or that anyone is hoping against it. I WANT to see him win. It's not all that much fun to sit in a PMAC so quiet and devoid of fans that you can literally hear the bench chanting "defense, clap, clap, defense" like cheerleaders. But I have not seen an LSU coach in my lifetime who has so much unwavering support by a small group, yet has accomplished so little. A group that bristles and ANY perceived slight.

I’m not going to replay to your short story of a response other than by saying, McMahon was given a shitty opening hand and was not on an even playing field with the rest of the conference in year 1. The team made substantial strides in year 2 and was much more competitive in the league. Year 3 will be his best roster yet.

Alt26 will predict 6 SEC wins like he did last year then still rag on McMahon when they win 9 lol. That is the kind of person you are trying to reason with.

plus he writes a book full of half assed info in every post. A year ago Missouri was still the Golden Child for roster makeovers.

I wonder if all the retards on the rant/Wade worshipers who have been calling for McMahon’s head will give him any credit if he gets this thing rolling again.

If we stop acknowledging them, they'll eventually go away.

CMM is building a really good program and building it the right way!

I feel like most people ignored his introduction. They were very clear that he was going to be very deliberate in the rebuild. He is a coach that has been known for building teams through culture and development. I'm excited about a consistent basketball program.

that's what I thought and I agree with you. That is 100% fair. We take care of business in November/December and finish top 8 in conference we will be in the big dance.

Huge get for the program.

Can you imagine if Magic starts turning up court side with Shaq? Top recruits will be flooding the place.

The team looks really good in practice. Much better than the last 2 years.

The most vocal people on here {I hesitate to call them fans} are also the most impatient and over-reactionary. They refuse to see, or a least acknowledge the situation CMM was put into or the progress being made. Any positive remark made about the tea or McMahon gets shouted down. It's sad really.

Great pickup!

Thanks to you all for turning yet another basketball thread into a McMahon v Wade bitchfest.
______________

Agree on both points.

Welcome aboard Mazi! Some of us are excited that a good player like you chose the Tigers!

Ah, the consummate contrarian and smartest guy in the room has made his appearance. Welcome!

I never "ragged" McMahon for winning 9 games in the SEC. In fact, just the opposite. I said he and his team showed improvement. But "improvement" in today's college basketball isn't always linear because of so much roster change and success can be fleeting. I've always said he's done a good job on the HS recruiting trail, and did so again here. When McMahon's teams have performed well, I've said as much. When not, I've said that too. The numbers speak for themselves. He's 31-35 (11-25). There's been more "bad" than good.

However, there are some posters that bristle at ANYTHING which they construe as criticism of McMahon. It's bizarre. No other LSU coach in at least the last 40 years has been viewed so softly. Brian Kelly took over a program that everyone loves to point out had 37 scholarship players and a .500 record the previous 2 years. He won the SEC West in year 1 and went 9-3 last season. He's 4-1 now and countless fans want him gone. Orgeron, Miles, Mainieri, Brady, Johnson, Jones, etc, fans turned on them quickly at any hint of failure. Yet, in sport that has proven to be the easiest to turn things around quickly, any questioning of McMahon is simply not tolerated.

Regardless, I WANT him to succeed at LSU. I WANT this season to be the first in 3 years where I'm not 1 of a total of 5 people sitting in a 20 seat row of the PMAC at 75% of the games. I think he has done a solid job recruiting here. Hopefully that will now start translating into results. I don't care enough about "message board clout" to want to be "right" or to prove I'm the smartest person in the room (partially because that is impossible with LE in our company). I hope he becomes the best HC in LSU history. But until any of that happens it's reasonable to question whether or not it ever will.

Things are rolling. As posted on the previous page the recruiting classes:
quote:
2022: 24th
2023: 41st
2024: 13th
2025: 10th (Not Complete)

Recruiting is great and I am super happy that he is bringing in quality players but he has to win games before we can declare that he has it rolling. Ed O recruited well his entire time at LSU but after 2019, the wins didn't keep coming and he was fired.

I LOVE the recruiting success CMM is having and I am hopeful that it will translate to wins.

This is so backwards its not even funny. The most vocal people in the BBall threads are those that can see no fault in CMM and ANY criticism gets SHOUTED down with downvotes and multiple replies. Alt, myself, and most others that have posted about the reality of our results have also given flowers where they are due. We have praised the recruiting success, the roster retention, the player development from year 1 to year 2 but the second we also mention that we expect a tournament team in year 3 we get shouted down.

Its crazy to me that the biggest CMM "supporters" don't think he is a good enough coach to make the tournament.

Actually, you Bret Macklin seem to be one of the more balanced and fair poster on this subject. Other posters on the other hand refuse to admit that the program was put in a bad situation and is clawing their way out of it. That's my biggest issue, that plus every thread about this someone feels the need to throw wade in the mix... And how he's doing at Mcneese.

Haha “Committed”. There needs to be a better word to use in the recruitment world. We all know most these kids don’t commit to shat until the put ink to paper.

Maybe “Highly Interested (for now)”
