Is Scag or John Deere the best commercial mower?

I'm thinking of getting the Scag TigerCat2. Anybody have experience with this mower? Also is there any real difference between the TigerCat2 and Turftiger2?

Lastly, why is Scag considered better than say a comparable Hustler (BigDog), gravely, toro, bad boy, etc. TIA for all input.

I have a friend with a landscaping company that only uses Walker mowers. I haven't had detailed discussions with him as to why but he looked at JD, gravely, scag before choosing walker. He even drove 800 miles to buy a used one he wanted it so bad.

I have owned a commercial Exmark for 8 yrs and have had very good service out of it. No problems. They are tough as a boot but pretty expensive, but you get what you pay for. I would definitely buy another one.

most of the big boy commercial lawn companies here around BR are running John Deeres. Love the no air tires they come with . I do know that 7 iron deck is supposed to have the best cut.

It really depends on service and contracts.

Most in Atlanta are using Scags and Exmarks. You rarely see a deer

The commercial John Deeres come with a very nice suspension seat and the 7 Iron deck, which is considered the best deck (slightly better than the Scag Velocity Plus). Nothing out there compares to those 2 decks for cutting any range of grass thickness and moisture.

If you are mowing commercially, there is a world of difference between the TC2 and TT2.

Quality of Cut (QOC) is why the John Deere 900 series and Scag's with the Velocity deck are considered the top. The other commercial decks will sometimes struggle dispersing clippings with tall or wet grass. If you are not mowing commercially, you wouldn't notice but commercial guys can't wait for grass to dry. All of the pumps/motors/hydros are outsourced by the same people. And the engine combinations are all around the same except for I believe only Gravely and Bad Boy offer the Yamaha.

I've had a Scag for 14 years with very little maintenance since purchase other than normal wear items, just change the oil, blades, and the mower belt from time to time.

Heavy as hell, and tough.

I’ve only had Exmark and Scag,Scag is much better mower.I spent many hours researching zero-turns before I bought Scag.I decided Scag was the best overall and I’ve been very happy with mine.

What is the difference besides durability?

The TC2 is a great mower. It has the Velocity deck and is very well built. However, if you are running it every day then the engines available on the TT2 are much better suited for heavy use. Those larger pumps and motors require a lot of HP. The TT2 is also drive shaft driven.

The turf tiger 2 has a shaft driven cutter deck vs a belt driven cutter deck on the tiger cat. I think the frame is beefier on turf tiger as well. I have a Turf Tiger 2 with a 37hp efi vanguard and it is an absolute beast. Deere is good too but you always pay a bit extra for green paint.

And as far as the "tweels" pictured above on the Deere you can pretty well buy them for any zero turn now but the price is definitely on the higher side

My only problem with the tigerturf2 is that they don’t offer it in a 48in deck size. Most people’s backyard gates won’t let 52s or 54s through

I just bought a used Kubota ZD326. I’ve got a couple of 3-4 acre fields plus my 3-4 acre yard by the house. The fields are basically bush hog material but, the diesel Kubota is an absolute beast! Plows through thick grass/weeds/brush with no hesitation. I can honestly say this is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I just wanted to give you my opinion on a different commercial mower other than Scag or JD.

Agree. Kubota is tough to beat. For me, it was between kubota diesel and a scag. Chose scag bc of warranty and proximity to dealer. Love kubota tho!!

Back in the day I had about 80 yards a week. Walker was the best back then.

Kubotas are very good. Grasshoppers, Scags and of course Kubota all use the diesel Kubota engines in their diesel models.
