re: I have a rat/mouse in my house

I used to live in an apartment and saw one run out on my counter a few times.
Set out sticky traps and it got stuck on a few of them but always managed to jam them against the stove and break free while I was gone.
I then put out snap traps with Nutella. The mouse would lick it off without triggering the trap.
I then pulled out my stove, figured out it was living in the crawl space, coming through a hole, and not in my actual apartment so I wasn't worried about it dying inside. Set out poison, the mouse ate all of it and that was the end of the mouse.
Balled up tinfoil and stuffed it in the hole, never had another problem.
Smart mouse though.

3) Very important; When you set the traps, make that it is perpendicular and up against the wall of where you're going to set them, even places like under your sink. Make sure that the springing action is going towards that wall, because rats run along edges, and this will mean a quick kill. A whole lot less likely that you either miss it or just get its legs.
Also, two traps are better than one. I place them side-by-side, perpendicular to the wall/baseboard. I bait with a bit of Kraft Single pushed well into the trigger area, and cover it with a bit of peanut butter.
I use the spring type with the yellow triggers. They usually work, but sometimes I have a slick mouse that can repeatedly pick the trap. I have some of the traps with the metal trigger that I rigged to have a hair trigger, so much so that I can barely set the trap down in place without it throwing. They usually do the trick.
Don't throw the traps away after you catch the first one. A trap that has caught a mouse works better than a brand new one. Just wear some gloves when you handle the trap.
DO NOT use poison under any circumstances. If you know, you know.

Order a cage trap off Amazon and put peanut butter on the trap tab.
I’ve caught about 50 rats and mice over past couple years with it. Very effective.

Probably everybody knows this, but we use dental floss holding the peanut butter on the trap.

I've had a lot of success with these too. Mine liked sharp cheddar.
I don't mind killing them but the wife prefers the more humane option so I use these and turn them loose in a cane field about a mile away.

Yep. I've done this for years and the metal ones still have me on edge.

Thanks! Just bought two from Amazon.

Have a heart trap or snap-trap baited specifically with a Hershey Kiss. Never fails.

Why?

Because they can eat the poison and run off and die. The dying is ok, but they might be in your walls and your house is gonna smell awful for a couple weeks

If she won’t have a cat, convince her to her to borrow your buddies cat for 2 weeks. Just the smell of the cat will make them move on to your neighbors house. Rinse/repeat once a year

Plug in mouse repellent. Little white boxes that you plug in to an outlet that omits a noise that only they can hear. Apparently it drives them nuts. We had a problem with field nice when we lived out in the country. Put one each in every room in the house and never had a problem again.

Get a cat. Ours is indoor outdoor, she is like John Wick when it comes to anything smaller than an adult rabbit. Probably have 2 mice/week at my garage door steps. Also if you have trees hanging over your house, cut those bitches back or get rid of them completely.

Umm. What kind of solution is that? Trade a nuisance for something that can be fatal?

And you'll have more flies in your windows than an "Omen" movie.

My experience is mixed with traps
I’ve had success with glue, hidden and snap traps
Bait - peanut butter is good
Placement is key- along walls and or corners.
Also- there’s never just one mouse or rat. Usually if you see one, there’s a lot
Trap them outside, Block their entry points and any spots inside that have holes. They can fit through real small holes.
Cats are good idea too

Underneath kitchen cabinets, and other dark spots they frequent, can be very effective, too. They feel safe, and it usually doesn't take long for you to to hear the trap snap.

Set two snappers the other night. Heard the first one snap before I got the second one set.
Peanut butter. Although sometimes they can lick it clean without tripping it.

I am a proponent of live traps.
No gross mess of dealing with a dead mouse.
Bobus tip: you can always relocate the trapped mouse to an enemy's house.
