How complicated is it to replace a bathroom heat/vent/light?

Exhaust function went out on the one we've got, heat and light still work. Is it easy enough to watch a video and do it myself or is this something I need to call someone for?

I just replaced the vent fan in our bathroom today. It can be done but it is a pain in the neck trying to hold everything up and get the electric hooked up and the exhaust line. They say you can do it without getting in the attic, but I just bit the bullet and got up there and mounted it on the rafter. Also, my exhaust line was only 3" and the fan I bought had a 4" exhaust connection so I had to go back and get an adapter to neck it down. Not a particularly technical job but it might help if you have an extra set of hands to hold up the fixture while you are hooking everything up. I guess the level of ease will depend on how handy you are with those type things.

I did two in my house. One just recently. It's not bad, more of just aggravating. If you have another had to hold in place while you get a screw or nail in the stud, it'll help out. Once one is in it will hold its own weight enough for you to do the rest

Eta... I did both of mine from the attic

I have repaired mine to avoid replacing.

They do not always line up properly and sheetrock may have to be repaired too.

Can you get to it from your attic? Sometimes easier.

If you can find an exact replacement, it is easy. Otherwise, it can be a pain.

If you consider yourself any kind of DIYer at all, this is well within the realm of your abilities. And could require going in attic. But if you replace with a larger (or smaller) sized model, the work will quickly multiply.

And curious if you actually use the heat mode of your current fan? Not used in our family, so I eliminate the wall switch for that function, which simplifies things.

It can be a pain but can also be easy.

You can usually just replace the vent fan unit from below. At least on the ones I’ve had. I have replaced vent fans and the heater coils.

Watch a video, pull the fan unit out, take it to an appliance parts store and buy a replacement. Or order it.

Should be a modular fan unit that can be replaced without taking the whole thing out of the ceiling.
Get the brand and model# off the unit and do a search for the fan motor.

When replacing HVL, look for like kind. Same product. Makes it easy, leave the housing, work from there.

Same with garbage disposal. Same brand, Hp, etc.

Remove cover. Remove one or two screws and unplug the exhaust fan motor or fan motor assembly. Search fan motor part # on google. Get new motor. Put it back together. Turn on fan.

It recently became more difficult if you have a broan 655. The most sold HVL, with about 90% market share, has recently changed their design, and you can no longer just replace the guts, you need to replace the can as well. If you can hunt down a replacement fan, that would be your best wisest option

I had to change the heating element in one of ours a few years back. We live in an older home so it took a little clicking around on the web cross-referencing part numbers, but I found the exact replacement.

I would pull the old fan down and try to do the same if I were you.

It 100% depends. I did one in my masterbath that was wasy and took just minutes, and did another in a different bathroom that was not vented properly and required a lot of extra work.

If you can get to it from the attic, it's much easier than doing it from below unless it's the same model or dimensionally close.
