GC’s and Electrical Contractors - Lack of Availability of Breakers above 200A
Posted on 12/3/22 at 8:55 am

Anyone concerned that the current shortage of larger breakers will cause end users to stop pursuing new projects due to the uncertainty of availability of panelboards and larger breakers?
My last 2 jobs we had to piecemeal our panelboards due to parts not coming in on time. Currently waiting on larger breakers and at risk of coming to a halt on our project. Not only are parts not making their ship date, manufacturers are not even giving dates anymore. I’ve spoken to a few other GC’s who do $100 mil+ jobs and they are going through the same.

we have components on 40+ week backorder, and we are still rolling projects. It's crazy how "covid" is still the excuse!

I’m on the supply side. 320 meters, modular metering, and large frame breakers and disconnects have been trouble.
Having some luck with 400amp framed breakers, no luck over that.

It took me 6 months to get one 200 amp meter base for the farm

I just paid 4500 bucks on eBay for a 400A meter pan

Lead times have been absolutely insane since COVID hit. I believe some manufacturing facilities shutdown initially but demand actually increased and hasn’t stopped. Now copper is probably 3x what it was prior. Not sure they can make them fast enough.
I have a family member that works for Eaton and has been a godsend getting his hands on certain scarce breakers

Be careful to not purchase counterfeit breakers while having to shop around outside of your normal channels.

Thats better than some OEM auto parts manus saying "two weeks" for everything not in stock. Could be two years and they would still say 2 weeks.

Lead time on electrical gear is around 52 weeks right now.
Medium voltage transformers
Stainless Sectionalizers
Switchgear
Mechanical equipment lead times are bad as well
Chillers
Pumps
Towers
VFDs
AHUs
New projects will be virtually complete waiting on electrical/mechanical equipment to plug in to finish

52 weeks if you are lucky. And expediting by throwing more money at the problem doesn’t seem to fix anything any more like it use to pre Covid.

What is it in 400a and above breakers that is so hard to get?
Posted on 12/3/22 at 10:07 am to thermal9221
I’m partner in a moderate sized home building company. We have a few customers that want 400A service for future plans. We also are building one with a 3 bay electric car charging station. I have told our electrician contractor to order each and every one from whatever distributors they have. Price no object.

Labor to get them built and shipped out.

Are you in the oem manufacturing industry?

Package RTUs are another big one that will delay projects many months.

Is the market to build this 400 amp stuff difficult to break into? I guess I’m surprised there hasn’t been a shift in manufacturing to where labor is not an issue.
Is it raw materials? Steel? cuts and dies? What makes it so hard to make these electrical parts?

Anyone having trouble with losing equipment once it’s been installed?
I know of an electrical contractor who did underground service in a new subdivision.
One day all the transformers were missing, turns out they were actually robots in disguise.

quote:as usual it’s not just one thing. Specific to the 320/400 meter pans I have been told that milbank can’t get the resins for the socket. Who knows if that’s true but it’s a mess right now.

unfortunately a big factor is hoarding and reselling (similar to what happens when there’s a run on ammo)
