Cat, leave the garage door slightly cracked so it can get in and out when it wants / needs to

Sounds like you moved into their neighborhood and they are politely asking you to leave

I live and grew up in the lafayette area, closer to Scott, though. I have run across lots of snakes, grew up in a rural area next to a coulee, crap ton of cottonmouths. But I literally never ran across a copperhead in the area, I have in north Louisiana, but not in the Lafayette area. I've heard have some in our area but I think of them as rare here.

Shoot, come to my area in Youngsville. Copperheads are all over where I work and at my house every year( I work 1 mile from home).

I'd kill 6-8 a year at my old house in Covington, bit one of my dogs on the leg. I've loved snakes all my life, but one morning ruined that for me. I stepped on a Copperhead barefoot and lost my shite. Still get freaked out thinking about it.

Makes me wonder if it was just my little area here so near that coulee. Plus it always seemed we had lots of of king snakes in the area.

I still live pretty near where I grew up, though it is no longer rural in any way. I rarely see snakes now and when I do it is seems it is usually a garter snake or a dekay's

What kind of snakes did your cat kill?

We had some absolutely vicious mice killing cats for awhile, and they would eat the occasional ribbon snake.

But they were around when those copperheads were under the carport or in the yard, and they (the cats) didn’t do a damn thing to warn us, and they certainly didn’t seem likely to kill a big copperhead.

In short, I don’t think of cats as very useful when it comes to snakes, unless you are scared of ribbon snakes.

Not sure how much land you've got, but you could also look into Guineas. They are annoying but they absolutely hate snakes and are grade A snake assassins.

Agree completely with this, if you have a flock of Guinea fowl, there will not be a small snake in your yard again…ever.

I know around here in Middle Tennessee that September to October is when I see the most copperheads. Our property on the Cumberland Plateau is eat up with them this time of year, especially the juveniles. Luckily, we're out of cottonmouth range. We do get some big ol' fat rattlesnakes, however. Scary looking bastards.

2 different snakes killed 2 of my neighbors cats. one venomous and one constricted it to death. found a dead cat in my yard and was all WTF happened here. i killed both snakes but telling my 80 year old neighbor that her cat died in my yard really sucked.

that being said, these were spoiled cats that didn't have much outdoor living experience. i know cats are a good deterrent.

And didn't get bitten? Pretty lucky if you ask me.

Still, the stuff of nightmares!

Maybe some Holiness Churches in Appalachia have a few they dont want. I am a fan on the King Snake now. (3 months ago I would say only dead snakes are good snakes)

There's coyotes around where I am. I just saw one within the last week. I have a rifle ready if I see him again. My wife got 2 kittens a year ago. By 5 months old, they have been outside barn cats. They come inside maybe once a day to nap and get some treats but they love it outside.

The female is just now 1 year old and she has killed several snakes and mice.

Mine alerts us to any snake it notices in the yard, and I’m hoping/assuming it notices most or all of them.

It kills the smaller non venomous ones and just barks like crazy at the others.

For real? Is this their breed in general or is yours a trained killer?
