Any positives or negatives to having crows around your house and yard? Moved into current house almost a year ago. There’s always group of crows nearby in the neighborhood. I see them up on nearby power lines and scavenging in random yards and on the levee behind the house.

I decided to feed them some bread and small bits of ham for first time today. I made sure one saw me while I was placing it. He swooped in within a minute and then called a couple friends over. I was surprised how quickly it happened.

I had noticed that they’ve become unbothered by me. They used to always fly away when I drive up but stopped flying away more recently.

Any drawbacks to having them around? Or should I encourage them further?

I have a group on my property as well which I see roaming all over like chickens to eating floating fish food that get stuck near the pond bank. The also take some from my bird feeders. They are some smart birds!

They make one hell of a racket and crap everywhere.

Crows are fascinating and have the intelligence of a 5-7 year old child. They even remember human faces for their lifetime, so make sure to be good to them or they will hold a grudge against you…forever.

All in all, I think they’re pretty cool, especially if you’ve become friendly with them.

Like poster above said, they are fascinating birds. Extremely smart.

It's been said that they will make trades with you for food. Supposedly will bring trinkets and leave them where you put food out. I don't know that is true but I have read it.

They will also keep hawks and falcons away which is a plus if you have chickens.

There was one at a local hardware store that could kind of talk.

You've laid out two reasons I'm not crazy about crows.

They eat the shite out of the deer corn from a feeder I have 50 yards from my front porch. They also harass the two hawks I have that live close to my house. I love those hawks as I've seen them several times flying off from a field 100 yards from my porch with a few rodents and a snake or two.

The hawks and the owls don't mess with my bulldog or my two cats. I don't mess with egg layers, but I raise meat chickens once or twice a year but they're always kept in a broiler pen.

My dad one as a pet when I was a little kid. He and my grandpa would climb trees and grab a couple young cows and raise them as pets.

The one I remember was cool. He'd go into the neighbor's car (she kept the windows cracked) and steal everything from dollar bills to the foil inside cigarette packs.

I've heard that crows will peck the eyes out of baby goats so they will die and then become food for the crows.

So if you're a goat and are planning on having kids, don't do anything to attract crows for sure.

This American Life had a good podcast segment recently called The Gladiator Starring Ruffled Crow. A guy cut a tree, and a local crow got pissed at him. If the guy went out in disguise, the crow was fine, but if he revealed his identity the crow flipped out. It had some interesting info in a fun story.

This could be true. I found a dead goat once with it's eyes pecked out with a crow on top of it.

they can be bad for chickens too though. had a friend who raised chickens and had eggs that were going missing and couldnt figure out why. one day he found out after watching a crow take an egg up to the power line and then dropping it on the road below.

Personally, I like crows, but they gave me fits raising watermelons when I was younger. During a drought they will peck a hole through them for water/liquid. After a while I swear they were doing it just to piss me off. Instead of going to one that already had a hole in it, they would ruin a new watermelon.

Personally, I hate crows. I have observed them pulling up my purple hull pea seeds as soon as they break ground. They will go right down the row pulling them up an eating the pea seed off the sprout. They are very smart. I’ve seen them dig up seed that hadn’t even broke ground. I wondered if they watched me plant it lol

This. They wrecked a little over an acre of sweet corn I planted a few years ago. Pulled up the sprout and ate the kernel.

When I was a kid a neighbor had one as a semi-pet. I've always wanted to raise one. After being in the woods hunting, hiking and camping every year, all my life, I have never even seen a crow nest.

Raising a crow is actually on my bucket list. Probably the only thing on the list I won't experience!
