Why do you believe it? I ask because if you want to possibly change your view you should look into mark rippetoe's success stories with training older(55+) trainees and the difference it has made in their lives.
Honestly deadlift is not a dangerous exercise at all, just requires proper form. Same goes for bench and more people are injured doing bench and have shoulder problems than get hurt deadlifting or squatting.
Now to answer the OPs question I think deadlift is the better of the two exercises, as I think sissy squats are a better quad builder.
But I would not say either exercise is the best. To me heavy sandbag presses and carries are the best followed closely by some type of vertical pull.

Squats. Dead lifts give me hemorrhoids.

I feel bad for many of them.
But thats not the deadlift's fault.

so youre saying deadlifts are out there, snatching up randos and making them lift with a rounded back and too much weight?

You seen squat depth at most gyms?

I've always hated squat and loved the deadlift so deadlift.
I always see people load way too much and squat 1/4 ROM where as deadlifting it's harder to cheat.

Deadlift.
Squats get my legs strong as hell but I feel like everything comes together when I deadlift.

Watch people do Lat Pull downs at the gym. Or watch people use the Smith Machine. I see both done worse than incorrect deadlifts.

Yes. When "Captain Gloves/Belt/PussyPad" loads up 300lbs for a quarter-squat on the bar, when his back and core are nowhere near strong enough to actually support it and do a real squat, that is the guy that hurts himself.

I'm never sure if this is serious, so apologies if I take it seriously and it was a joke.
Less deep squats enhance patellar issues and back issues. Plus, if you squat to full depth, you can't miss low. If you have a shallow squat and misjudge and go too deep, you won't have the power to get out of the hole. That's a one way ticket on an elevator that only runs to the basement.

thats funny cause bench press causes way more injuries than the deadlift. How come people don't say not to bench past age 25?
